Forum on Information and Democracy

💡We believe democratic institutions must lead the development and implementation of democratic principles and rules to govern the development, deployment and use of all aspects of AI in the information space. Therefore, the Forum on Information and Democracy established an international Policy Working Group led by 14 diverse experts to elaborate recommendations to safeguard our democratic information space.

🗓️On 28 February, the International Forum on Information and Democracy launched its Policy Recommendations on Artificial Intelligence and its Implications for the Information and Communication Space.

These measures will
📌ensure the safe and responsible development and deployment of AI systems
📌establish appropriate liability and accountability regimes
📌incentivize ethical AI
📌and put in place governance and oversight mechanisms.

🧑🏻‍💻It was an online and in-person event connecting at the same time speakers from Berkeley, Brasilia, Cape Town, Florence & Paris. Speakers included:

🗓️On 14 February 2024, our Chair Christophe Deloire took part in the Council of Europe Ministers’ Deputies meeting urging them to take the necessary measures to ensure the right to access reliable information.

💡Specifically, he called upon the Council of Europe to elaborate an international binding Convention on the right to access reliable information.

🗣️“Democratic countries must join efforts to defend democracy and our global information space. The International Partnership for Information and Democracy can be the basis to elaborate a Convention on the right to access reliable information”, Christophe Deloire stated at the meeting.

🌐 As the implementing entity of the International Partnership for Information and Democracy, the Forum works to develop the normative and policy frameworks, facilitate exchange among democratic States, and provide a periodic evaluations of the evolution of the right to reliable information.

🌐Brazil leads the G20 this year and we look forward to exciting advancements in ensuring our right to reliable information. Brazil’s commitment to an information ecosystem that works for citizens and democracies inspires us as we work on complex issues impacting our democracies as a result of digital technology.

💡This article also points out the urgency for an IPPC for the information space. Columnist Jamil Chad notes that we must create awareness of the need to collect evidence about the impact of disinformation, whether on health, democracy, economic stability and all other spheres of society. Indeed, he notes that the IPCC for climate change is a great model for something similar in the information space.

💪🏻This is exactly what we at the Forum are building. We call it the International Observatory for Information and Democracy and we kicked off this incredibly important work at IGF in Kyoto late last year. The Observatory will establish that shared understanding of the facts that will result in better, more coordinated policy responses.
