▪Why does this matter?
When museums start including Indigenous and local knowledge alongside Western science, the result is often oversimplified or turned into a template. And even when the intention is good, the way knowledge gets interpreted and presented to visitors , whether through guided tours, exhibition labels, educational programmes, still tends to be shaped by a modern, Western lens.
Why is this so hard to change? Because the knowledge itself arrives fragmented. The gap between how traditional knowledge was built and how modern institutions operate is enormous. Many native languages, known as the living vessels of this knowledge, are no longer spoken fluently across generations. And the communities who hold this knowledge have seen their landscapes transformed by decades of policy change, population shifts, and climate change. Add the pressures of tourism and local bureaucracy, and cultural interpretation becomes even harder to keep in the hands of the people it belongs to.
▪About This Forum
This event brings museum professionals directly into a conversation that is rarely heard outside the village.
Through two pre-recorded interviews at Kabalelradhane Village (神山部落) the Rukai people in Pingtung County, Taiwan, you will hear from an elder who lived through the era of colonial forestry plantation, sharing what the forest used to look like, how government tree-planting policies changed the mountains, and what today's young people are doing to reclaim that history. You will also hear a female elder and a young woman in dialogue that shows what it really looks like when traditional knowledge is passed on and when it breaks.
Together, these voices connect elders still practising traditional knowledge in daily life with a younger generation working to repair what has been lost and to reclaim the right to tell their own story.
We invite you to join this conversation and explore what it might mean for museums, cultural interpretation, and traditional knowledge to genuinely coexist.

當博物館開始重視西方現代知識以外的知識系統，如傳統生態知識與不同在地知識，詮釋這些多樣的知識體系時往往落入刻板化或模板化。更重要的是，第一線影響觀眾的導覽詮釋，始終難以脫離西方現代知識與當代社會脈絡所帶來的視角局限。對博物館而言，要在詮釋場域中真正容納在地知識體系並不容易，因為館方所獲得的資訊本身即是斷裂的：現代社會框架與傳統知識源生的脈絡存在極大落差，不同世代對母語（知識載體）的掌握程度差距過大，部落與地方所處的環境也因政策變遷、人口與氣候因素，在時間與空間上產生位移。當這些斷裂再疊加部落觀光興起或地方行政體系的介入，文化詮釋便持續受到外力牽引，使在地傳統知識的詮釋與傳遞更加困難。
本場論壇邀請經歷林班造林時代的耆老，分享關於樹的傳統知識，從傳統林相到殖民林業政策如何改變山林樣貌，再到當代青年如何重新理解這段歷史、尋找解殖的視角；也邀請女性耆老分享農耕智慧，與正在學習傳統植物族語的女性青年對話，從不同主題和性別視角，呈現知識在世代之間傳遞與斷裂的真實樣貌。
我們希望藉由神山部落魯凱青年的行動，串聯起仍在生活中實踐傳統知識的耆老，以及亟欲修復這些斷裂、尋回文化詮釋權的中青世代，共同討論博物館、文化詮釋與傳統知識共好的可能。
