🌊 Revised date! The 2nd Islands Water Congress is now taking place 27–29 January 2027.

This decision was made to maximise opportunities for engagement both at the 2nd Islands Water Congress and across the wider island water sector. The revised dates allow for the Congress to build on key developments in the global water agenda and continue important conversations on water security, resilience and sustainable development for islands and Small Island Developing States.

While the dates have changed, the mission remains the same: advancing sustainable and resilient freshwater management for islands worldwide.

Stay tuned for updates on registration, speakers, the technical programme, field visits and more.

🪨💧 Around the world, 2.5 billion people depend on groundwater as their sole source of freshwater. It is a vital resource that supports agriculture, industry, ecosystems and livelihoods across the globe. Yet despite its importance, groundwater often remains out of sight and undervalued in water policy and management.

Our upcoming webinar, “Groundwater Governance in a Changing Climate: Law, Policy and Practical Pathways,” jointly organised by the International Water Resources Association and the Environmental Defense Fund, examines why effective groundwater governance matters and how it can be strengthened as the impacts of climate change intensify.

Through a dynamic session with our panel of global experts, the webinar explores legal and policy approaches, innovative data tools, and practical experiences in groundwater management from around the world.

Join us to explore how law, policy and practice can help to safeguard groundwater in a changing world.

💧Shared water resources can create shared challenges. Yet, if managed well, they can also create shared opportunities.

The latest edition of Water International explores the realities of managing transboundary water resources in an increasingly complex world. Using a series of case studies from around the world, the issue examines how countries are responding to growing pressures such as climate change, development, and competing water demands in the context of shared water resources.

Together, these articles shed light on what is working, where challenges remain, and how transboundary water governance continues to evolve.

🌊 Happy World Oceans Day!

Our work at IWRA focuses on freshwater, but today we celebrate our connection to the world’s oceans.

Rivers, lakes, groundwater, wetlands, glaciers, and oceans are all part of the same water cycle. What happens upstream eventually reaches the sea, and what happens in the ocean influences weather, rainfall, ecosystems, and water security around the world.

As we mark World Oceans Day, we are reminded that sustainable water management requires us to think beyond boundaries and recognise the interconnected nature of our planet’s waters.

From source to sea, water connects us all.

🔓 Having abundant freshwater does not automatically guarantee water security. Our latest Editor’s Choice from Water International explores this paradox through the case of Quebec, Canada, home to 3% of the world’s renewable freshwater reserves.

In this article, Sessinou E. Houédanou analyses how overlapping federal and provincial responsibilities can create governance challenges for equitable and sustainable access to safe water, particularly in the face of climate change.

A must-read for anyone interested in the role of law in achieving water security, especially in the context of growing climate and social challenges. Read it now - thanks to the publisher, it’s free access until 31 July 2026!

🤖 From promises to challenges - Ready for another webinar on Water and AI?

Artificial Intelligence and data centres are transforming water management. But, while they can help build smarter, more efficient, and more resilient water systems, they can also place freshwater resources under pressure.

Our new webinar series, “The Promises and Challenges of AI, Data Centres & Freshwater Futures,” addresses both these opportunities and the risks.

After a successful first session with nearly 200 participants dedicated to the promises of AI for the water sector, it's time to focus on the challenges.

On Wednesday 3 June, join us and our expert panel in a dynamic session, as we continue exploring the intersection of emerging technologies and water management.
