🌞 Global Winner Announced: Light of Tomorrow by VELUX 2026 (lightoftomorrow.velux)

Congratulations to XU Qicheng, LUO Jun, GAO Rui, RUAN Guoqiang, ZHANG Xuanyi and CAI Kunhong from Xi’an University of Architecture and Technology (China), winners of the global daylight prize with their project “Sun the Quilt”.

This UIA-endorsed biennial competition challenges architecture students to rethink the role of daylight in everyday life. The winning proposal transforms the everyday act of drying textiles and household objects into an adaptable façade system — blending daylight modulation, ventilation, shading and drying into one smart architectural solution.

🏛️ Beijing named UNESCO-UIA World Capital of Architecture for 2029!

The UNESCO has officially designated Beijing as the next World Capital of Architecture, following the recommendation of the Joint UNESCO-UIA Committee.

Beijing joins an distinguished lineage — after Rio de Janeiro (2020), Copenhagen (2023) and Barcelona (2026) — becoming the 4th city to hold this title. The designation celebrates the city’s exceptional ability to combine one of the world’s richest architectural heritages with a forward-looking vision of sustainable urban development.

🌏 Under the theme “Back to Balance”, Beijing 2029 will promote architecture as a bridge between culture, nature and people — through exhibitions, conferences, educational programmes and public learning opportunities on inclusive, sustainable and human-centred urban futures.

This announcement follows the successful close of the UIA World Congress of Architects 2026 in Barcelona.

🏛️ World Architecture Day 2026: “Housing is a Human Right. Build It.”

Mark your calendars for Monday, 5 October 2026.

The UIA is proud to announce this year’s theme, aligned with UN World Habitat Day’s which focuses on “Adequate Housing for All”.

Millions of people worldwide still lack access to safe, adequate, and affordable housing — with real consequences for health, dignity, and inclusion. This World Architecture Day, we call on architects everywhere to go beyond design and engage in the conversations shaping housing policy, affordability, and equitable access to the built environment.

🔑 Key messages:

🏘️ Housing is a right, not a luxury
🌍 The housing crisis is one of the most pressing challenges facing our cities and communities
✏️ Architects have a role to play in policy, advocacy, and practical solutions
♻️ Inclusive housing models and the reuse of existing building stock are part of the path forward

Get involved: organize a lecture, exhibition, or webinar, and help us showcase inclusive and affordable housing solutions from your community.
