During 2026, Dr Eng. Martin Manuhwa, Chair of the WFEO Committee on Engineering Capacity Building (CECB), contributed to discussions on how engineering innovation and Artificial Intelligence (AI) can help accelerate sustainable access to water and sanitation across Africa.

Speaking during the session organized by the Nigeria Delegation to UNESCO, Dr. Manuhwa highlighted the importance of digital transformation, engineering education, and international collaboration in advancing .

His intervention also showcased practical pilot programmes and AI-enabled solutions supporting water infrastructure, technical capacity building, and regional cooperation across the continent.

The discussions reinforced the need for stronger partnerships, investment, and engineering-led innovation to support sustainable development and water security in Africa.

Representing the World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO) and its Water Committee, Ms Lylian Coelho highlighted the urgent need to move from knowledge to action to achieve and strengthen integrated approaches to water management across the continent.

The session also facilitated valuable exchanges with representatives from Angola, Ivory Coast, Morocco, Senegal, and Nigeria, reaffirming the importance of regional cooperation, partnerships, innovation, investment, and strong governance frameworks rooted in a human rights-based approach.
