The IATC draws together more than two thousand theatre critics, through some fifty National Sections. Founded in Paris in 1956, the IATC is a non-profit, Non-Governmental Organization benefitting under statute B of UNESCO. The purpose of the IATC is to bring together theatre critics in order to promote international cooperation. Its principal aims are to foster theatre criticism as a discipline an

d to contribute to the development of its methodological bases; to protect the ethical and professional interests of theatre critics and to promote the common rights of all its members; and to contribute to reciprocal awareness and understanding between cultures by encouraging international meetings and exchanges in the field of theatre in general. The IATC holds a world congress every two years, seminars for young critics twice a year, as well as symposiums, and contributes to juries. English and French are the association's two official languages, and its place of incorporation is Paris. Plus de deux mille critiques de théâtre, répartis dans une cinquantaine de pays, ou Sections nationales, forment l'AICT. Fondée à Paris en 1956, cette association sans but lucratif est une organisation non gouvernementale bénéficiant du statut B de l'UNESCO. Elle a pour objet de rassembler les critiques de théâtre afin de promouvoir la coopération internationale. Ses buts principaux sont de développer la critique de théâtre comme discipline et de contribuer au développement de ses bases méthodologiques ; de veiller aux intérêts moraux et professionnels des critiques de théâtre et de défendre et renforcer leurs droits ; de contribuer à la reconnaissance et à la compréhension réciproque entre les cultures en encourageant les rencontres internationales et les échanges dans le domaine du théâtre en général. L'AICT organise un congrès mondial tous les deux ans, des stages pour jeunes critiques deux fois par an, ainsi que des colloques, et elle prend part à des jurys. Ses langues officielles sont le français et l'anglais, et son siège est fixé à Paris.

The International Association of Theatre Critics (AICT/IATC) announced today that Professor Emerita Maria Shevtsova, the renowned scholar on Russian theatre, past and present, will receive the 2026 Thalia Prize on 22 May 2026 at its World Congress in Craiova, Romania.
Jeffrey Eric Jenkins (USA), president of the association, said, “It is impossible to overestimate the impact of Maria Shevtsova on our understanding of Russian theatre over the past several decades. Beyond Russia, however, Dr. Shevtsova has engaged broadly and deeply with European theatre directors and companies, helping to shine a brighter light on significant performance artists. It is truly a pleasure for us to honor her outstanding work and contributions to the field.”

Milo Rau in Bucharest in conversation with Gianina Cărbunariu, Mihai Mihalcea, and Oana Stoica as part of the Resistance Now Together program.
The Romanian group of the International Association of Theatre Critics, AICT.Ro, has invited Milo Rau to Bucharest as part of the Resistance Now Together program, at the initiative of theatre critic Oana Stoica.

The debate will take place on Thursday, 13 November, at 14:30, at ARCUB – the Cultural Center of the City of Bucharest. Free entry, subject to available seating.

The event is organized by AICT.Ro in partnership with Wiener Festwochen and Resistance Now Together, within the ARCUB 2025 International Theatre Season, in collaboration with the Camil Petrescu Cultural Foundation.

Supported by the Embassy of Switzerland in Romania, the Swiss Sponsors’ Fund, and the Austrian Cultural Forum.
