The 71st GEF Council and the Eighth Global Environment Facility Assembly are taking place from May 30 to June 6, 2026, in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. Under the theme of accelerating action toward 2030 goals, global environmental leaders are gathering to shape the future of environmental sustainability.

Our Project coordinator, Konstantina Toli, will be there to facilitate dynamic learning stations, support key side events, share insights, discuss transboundary water management, and connect with partners across the International Waters portfolio.

Are you attending? Let's connect and reach out to Konstantina to set up a meeting at the event.

🌊 Land, rivers, coasts, and oceans are not separate domains, they are parts of a deeply interdependent system.

When we manage freshwater and coastal waters in isolation, we miss the bigger picture. Upstream actions always impact downstream ecosystems.

That’s why we need a Source-to-Sea (S2S) approach. 🌍

We are thrilled to announce the launch of our brand-new publication by IW:LEARN! This guide offers the clear, practical, and experience-based guidance that project teams need to bring S2S principles to life.

Inside, you’ll find:
🔹 Step-by-step roadmaps for project cycles.
🔹 Practical checklists for implementation.
🔹 Real success stories from Global Environment Facility (GEF) International Waters projects worldwide.

- HAPPENING TOMORROW!

How do we turn transboundary water cooperation into real-world action across the entire land-to-ocean continuum?

As environmental and climate pressures accelerate, managing land, freshwater, coastal, and marine ecosystems as an interconnected whole is no longer optional - it is critical.

Join the UN Water Convention and IW:LEARN as we present two brand-new guidance publications side-by-side for the very first time. Together, they offer a comprehensive toolkit that pairs strong legal and policy foundations with hands-on, field-tested operational tools to streamline source-to-sea (S2S) management.

- How do we effectively manage ecosystems when rivers, coasts, and oceans are inherently connected, yet split by political borders?

Applying a Source-to-Sea (S2S) approach in transboundary settings is complex, it demands strong legal frameworks, cross-border cooperation, and practical tools.

To bridge this gap, the UN Water Convention and IW:LEARN have joined forces to launch two brand-new guidance publications. For the very first time, these complementary toolkits will be presented side-by-side to show how policy foundations can be paired with hands-on, project-level guidance.

Join us for an interactive webinar to discover how to turn transboundary cooperation into real-world action across the land-to-ocean continuum.

- Groundwater is one of Africa’s most vital - yet underutilized - assets for climate adaptation. With transboundary aquifers covering 40% of the continent, the need for proactive governance has never been more urgent.

We are proud to highlight the formal launch of the Strategic Programme on Groundwater for Water Security and Resilience in Africa, a collaborative blueprint developed by AMCOW and the GEF-funded G4DR project.

This programme moves the continent from reactive management to a data-driven future through four key pillars:
âś… Policy: Integrating groundwater into national climate plans.
âś… Capacity: Training the next generation of water professionals.
âś… Finance: Unlocking investment through the Groundwater Access Facility (GAFA).
âś… Data: Deploying tools like the Africa Groundwater Atlas.

As Mr. Nelson Gomonda (AMCOW) puts it: “This is a blueprint built on the consensus of the continent.”

- Tuna is a global powerhouse - supporting a $45 billion market and millions of livelihoods. But with great demand comes great responsibility.

The Common Oceans Tuna Project (a partnership between FAO, ISSF, and GEF) is proving that when scientists and fishers sit at the same table, magic happens.

Through over 200 workshops across 5 continents, Common Oceans are co-developing solutions to protect sharks, rays, and seabirds while ensuring the tuna industry remains sustainable.

Last November, the Asia Regional Large-Scale Marine Protected Area (LSMPA) Workshop brought together experts and policymakers in Iloilo City, Philippines, to tackle the unique challenges of managing vast marine territories.

From sustainable fisheries to biodiversity conservation, the focus was clear: how do we ensure these "blue corridors" are effectively managed for future generations?
