Dimanche 06 septembre 2026 - CORNY (57)

🇺🇸 The annual ceremony marking the 82nd anniversary of the Dornot-Corny bridgehead and the bloody Battle of the Horseshoe Woods took place on a beautiful, sunny afternoon. High-ranking civil and military officials from the Moselle Department and the region were in attendance, alongside numerous mayors, presidents of patriotic and commemorative associations, around forty standard-bearers, and a large gathering of guests and friends and families with their children.
Also noteworthy was the presence of a delegation of Gendarmerie Cadets, Firefighters from Corny-sur-Moselle, and youths from the Voluntary Military Service Regiment. The presence of these young people, all dedicated to France, was deeply appreciated.
The ceremony was presided over by Mr. Jérôme Segui, Secretary General of the Moselle Prefecture and Sub-Prefect of Metz. It took place under the military authority of Corps General Laurent Cluzel, Military Governor of Metz, and in the presence of Mr. Leslie Ordemen, Consul General of the United States of America.
The Armored Cavalry Branch Band magnificently underscored the various phases of the ceremony and gave superb renditions of” The Stars-Spangled Banner” and “La Marseillaise”. It was a magical moment.
Following the reception of the dignitaries, the official parties proceeded to their designated positions, and Corps General Laurent Cluzel, Military Governor of Metz, moved forward to salute the civilian and military contingents.
Next, three children from Corny, Lucie, Apolline and Morgan read deeply moving accounts from veterans who had fought at the Dornot-Corny bridgehead.
Then came speeches by Ms. Elisabeth Gozzo, President of Thanks GIs; Mr. Michel Vorms, President of Lorraine-États-Unis; Ms. Isabelle Caspar, Mayor of Corny; Ms. Ginette Magras, Departmental Councilor representing Mr. Patrick Weiten, President of the Moselle Departmental Council; Mr. Ludovic Mendès, Member of Parliament; Mr. Leslie Ordeman, Consul General of the United States of America; and finally, Mr. Jérôme Segui, Secretary General of the Moselle Prefecture and Sub-Prefect of Metz.
Then, thirteen wreaths were laid in front of the great memorial dedicated to the U.S. 5th Infantry Division—945 of whose GIs were killed, wounded, or missing during this bloody battle, now aptly nicknamed "the Omaha Beach of Lorraine."
After greeting and thanking the standard-bearers, hight-ranking officials from the Moselle department paid their respects at the first small memorial stele—erected in 1998—which bears an account of events by Madame Elisabeth Gozzo.
Everyone then gathered for a friendly reception.
It was a solemn and grandiose ceremony dedicated to those who, 82 years ago, sacrificed their young lives so that today we might rejoice in our freedom and take pride in being French.
Our sincere thanks go to the municipality of Corny-sur-Moselle, the members of the "Thanks GIs" association, and the GIs from the "Metz en guerre" association.
