Our Steps is a not for profit organization which celebrates Ireland's traditional dance & the story of its people through a range of innovative projects.

Our mission is to expand the way we think about the history, practice and performance of Irish Dance.

Interview with Ruth Garrett recorded on July 25, 2023/conducted by Colin Dunne

Ruth Garrett - born to Irish parents in London, England, grew up in Toronto, Canada and learned to dance first from Ron Plummer before transferring to June Butler. In 1981, under the Butler Academy, she became the first North American female dancer to win the World Championships.

Interview with Pat King recorded on July 21, 2023/conducted by Colin Dunne

Pat King - from Dundalk, Ireland - learned to play the accordion from Mrs. Bradley. He is a multiple All Ireland winner of “fleadh cheoil” and later became an influential musician in the competitive Irish dance community.

Interview with Ryan Carroll recorded on July 27, 2023/conducted by Jean Butler

Ryan Carroll danced competitively for the Butler Academy of Irish Dance under the tuition of June and Mae Butler until 1994. He toured as a lead-understudy with Riverdance before becoming a certified TCRG, ADCRG and BG with An Coimisiún.

Interview with Jennifer Mathews recorded on July 24, 2023/conducted by Colin Dunne.

Jennifer Mathews was the first ever North American dancer to place in the top 3 at the World Championships in 1972 in the Mansion House in Dublin. She was born in Toronto danced for Mae and June Butler at the Butler Academy of Irish Dance between the ages of 8 and 16.

Mickey Mahar is a dancer and performer originally from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He trained at Cashel-Dennehy School of Irish Dance, Milwaukee High School of the Arts and later at Vassar College. He now works primarily in visual art contexts appearing in the works of Anne Imhof, Maria Hassabi and Adam Linder and lives in Berlin, Germany.

Interview with Colin Dunne recorded on Oct 23 2020/conducted by Jean Butler.

Colin was born in Birmingham to Irish parents. A nine time world champion, he started dancing at the The Holy Family School of Irish Dance with Patricia and Anthony Comerford and later with Marion Turley at the Turley Academy. As a choreographer and performer Colin worked in Riverdance and Dancing on Dangerous Ground. For the past twenty years, Colin has been making award winning solo shows.

Interview with Carol Plummer recorded on July 21, 2023/conducted by Colin Dunne.

Carol Plummer, born to Irish parents in Stratford-upon-avon in the United Kingdom, danced and later teached for Mauretta and Bobby Armstrong in Birmingham. She emigrated to Toronto in 1977, where she taught with her husband - the late Ron Plummer - at the Plummer School of Irish Dancing.
