🌊🚀🌍 Today at the Faculty of Architecture of Porto, I had the pleasure of presenting the Jacques Rougerie Foundation International Architecture & Innovation Competition for 2026.

The Foundation challenges architects, designers, engineers, researchers, and students to imagine new ways of living and thriving across three major frontiers: flood-prone territories, the ocean, and space. Through bio-inspired thinking, innovation, and sustainability, the competition encourages visionary projects that contribute to the future of human habitats.

It was a privilege to share this opportunity with the FAUP community and discuss how architecture can help address some of the most pressing environmental and societal challenges of our time.

As National Coordinator of the Jacques Rougerie Foundation in Portugal, I look forward to seeing Portuguese talent contribute to this global conversation and shape the resilient, regenerative environments of tomorrow.

The future is not something we wait for—it is something we design.

On my way to Porto to tell about this outstanding competition

A Fondation Jacques Rougerie - Académie des beaux-arts apresenta, no dia 𝟵 𝗱𝗲 𝗷𝘂𝗻𝗵𝗼, na 𝗙𝗔𝗨𝗣, os seus 𝗽𝗿é𝗺𝗶𝗼𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗶𝘀 𝗱𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗼𝘀 à 𝗶𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮çã𝗼 𝗻𝗮𝘀 á𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀 𝗱𝗮 𝗮𝗿𝗾𝘂𝗶𝘁𝗲𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮, 𝗱𝗼 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝗯𝗶𝘁𝗮𝘁𝘀 𝗱𝗼 𝗳𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗼.

Aberto a estudantes e profissionais, individualmente ou em equipa, o concurso promove uma abordagem inclusiva e multidisciplinar à inovação, distinguindo projetos em duas modalidades: 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝘁𝗼 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘀𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗼, destinado a conceitos visionários e propostas de futuro, e 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝘁𝗼 𝗟𝗔𝗕, orientado para soluções operacionais, protótipos e projetos experimentais. A edição de 2026 atribui um total de 42.000 euros em prémios.

A sessão decorrerá às 11h00, no Auditório Fernando Távora, com a participação de 𝗖𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗮 𝗥𝗼𝗰𝗵𝗮 𝗔𝗻𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗲𝘀, Representante Oficial e Coordenadora Nacional da Fundação Jacques Rougerie em Portugal.

Palestra do Arqueólogo subaquático Jean Yves Blot no CPAS

Titulo da palestra: Os intrusos - regresso à paisagem submarina dos sítios de naufrágio e de dramas de mar, da Méduse (1816, Banco de Arguim, Mauritânia,19º lat norte) e do Saint-Géran (1744, ilha Maurícia, Índico, 20º lat Sul).

Resumo: Meio-século depois da investigação submarina inicial em dois sítios de naufrágio nos hemisférios norte e sul, a realidade no terreno confronta o arqueológo subaquático com o longo prazo das marcas e vivências de eventos, catastróficos à partida, envolvendo no final, o conjunto de uma paisagem marítima.

🌊 United by the Sea supports ocean action in Lisbon

United by the Sea, as one of the co-founders of LOPN – Lisbon Ocean Professionals Network, was proud to support the initiative organized by our member Pierre Rousseau, who also serves on the Board of the NGO Plastic Odyssey.

From March 8–10, 2026, Simon Bernard, CEO of Plastic Odyssey, was in Lisbon to meet with members of the ocean community and discuss new opportunities for collaboration.

Plastic Odyssey is an international non-profit organization dedicated to fighting plastic pollution through practical, field-tested solutions. Since 2022, its laboratory vessel has sailed across Africa, Latin America, and Asia, identifying local recycling innovations and building a network of more than 300 plastic recycling entrepreneurs worldwide.

Through its partnership with UNESCO, Plastic Odyssey is also leading expeditions in Marine World Heritage sites to help restore ecosystems threatened by plastic pollution. This collaboration combines scientific research, ecosystem restoration, and community engagement to protect some of the planet’s most valuable marine environments.

During Simon’s visit, we had the opportunity to connect members of our network with Simon Bernard and Pierre Rousseau, and to introduce many others to the Plastic Odyssey × UNESCO initiative.

These conversations explored opportunities to:

• Share perspectives on marine environmental protection strategies
• Discuss field experience from missions in Africa, Asia, and Latin America, including Portuguese-speaking countries
• Explore collaboration on awareness, training, and technical initiatives
• Identify synergies in ocean monitoring, coastal resilience, and maritime sustainability

We believe that strengthening these connections helps reinforce Portugal’s role as a leading hub for ocean innovation and governance.

🌍 Together, initiatives like these show how global cooperation can turn local solutions into real impact for our oceans.
