🌊 Protecting our oceans starts long before an emergency occurs.

From 1-5 June, we delivered a specialised training programme on Oil Spill Prevention and Response for 56 officers of the Zanzibar Coast Guard (Habari Picha KMKM), including senior leadership, at KMKM Headquarters near Stone Town, Zanzibar.

Supported by the Federal Foreign Office of Germany (Auswärtiges Amt), the training strengthened participants’ understanding of oil spill risks, prevention measures and response strategies, helping enhance environmental preparedness and operational readiness.

As maritime activities continue to expand, investing in the knowledge and skills needed to prevent and respond to environmental emergencies is essential to protecting marine ecosystems, safeguarding coastal livelihoods and advancing a sustainable Blue Economy.

🤝 Together with our partners, we remain committed to strengthening the capacities needed for a safer, more secure and sustainable maritime future.

What does leadership for peace look like in a world facing increasing uncertainty and change?

Last week in Geneva, the Senior Leadership for Peace Seminar 2026 brought together senior leaders from around the world to reflect on some of the most pressing challenges shaping the future of peace and security.

Jointly organised alongside the Geneva Centre for Security Policy, and the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs of Switzerland, the seminar created space for candid dialogue and peer exchange on topics including emerging technologies and AI, systems and futures thinking, and adaptive leadership.

By stepping back from day-to-day demands, participants explored how leaders can navigate complexity, respond to disruption, and help shape more peaceful futures.

⚖️ From the classroom to the world of international justice.

Through our LL.M. programme in Public International Law, delivered in partnership with Sigmund Freud University Vienna, aspiring international law professionals deepen their legal expertise while gaining direct exposure to the work of the United Nations and other international organizations.

As alumnus Arman Demircioglu shares:

“Through UNITAR’s LL.M. in Public International Law, I gained not only a deeper academic understanding of international law, but also a practical perspective on diplomacy, multilateral cooperation and international organizations. The programme’s distinguished experts and practice-oriented modules inspired and empowered me to pursue a career in public international law.”

Building on this foundation, Arman went on to complete internships at the International Court of Justice and the World Bank, demonstrating how a practice-oriented curriculum, exposure to the United Nations environment in Vienna, and tailored career development sessions can support pathways towards careers within the international system.

The one-year programme can be completed on campus in Vienna or fully online. It combines a rigorous public international law curriculum with specialised modules on diplomacy, the work of the United Nations and legal communication in international contexts.
