🎂 World Animal Justice turns 3 Today! 🌍⚖️🐾
💡Time to look back, reflect on where we are, and look ahead 🌟

🚀3 years ago, World Animal Justice (WAJ) was launched with one ambitious mission: to advance legal justice for animals worldwide.

🌍 Since our launch on 12 August 2023, WAJ has grown into a global legal initiative bringing together experts, NGOs and coalitions — and a community of 3,000+ followers on LinkedIn. Thank you all! 🙏

⚖️ Over these first three years, we have advocated to close major legal gaps for animals, combining legal expertise, global collaboration and innovative advocacy against major animal crimes worldwide.

Some milestones that have shaped our journey:
🤝 Building a global network for animal justice
Today, WAJ brings together 50+ experts, 20+ animal NGOs and 7 international coalitions, connecting expertise across animal law, international law, criminal justice and advocacy.

⚖️ Pioneering global criminal animal justice
WAJ has taken the lead in advancing legal pathways to ban “crimes against animality” and “zoocide” under international law — so that the gravest and most systemic crimes against animals no longer go unrecognized or unpunished.

📚 Turning legal expertise into tools for change
We have produced expert reports, policy briefs, legal databases, 10+ webinars and 20+ expert articles, including the Asian and African Animal Law Database, to empower animal advocates worldwide.

🏛️ Putting animal crimes on the global crime-prevention agenda
Ahead of the 15th United Nations Crime Congress (UNCC15), WAJ launched a major campaign on animal exploitation and organized crime convergence — producing an Expert Report on Animals & Crime Convergence, a Policy Brief on wildlife crime, and a Policy Declaration endorsed by 35+ NGOs worldwide.
Next month, WAJ will be represented at UNCC15, taking our call for stronger recognition of animal crimes directly to this major international crime-prevention forum.

🌱 Launching Food Forward Europe (FFE)
WAJ launched FFE to tackle a structural driver of animal exploitation: EU agricultural subsidies favouring livestock production going against legal obligations and policy commitments. In just months, this work has generated a major legal and policy report, an expert webinar, a Joint Statement, growing NGO collaboration and visibility in EU policy circles.

🤝 Building connections across movements
Through collaborations including Stop Financing Factory Farming, WAJ is connecting animal justice with wider food-system, climate and environmental advocacy.

🩵 None of this would have been possible without our core team, legal experts, NGO partners, and supporters. Thank you for believing in this mission and helping us build a stronger global movement for animal justice.

📖 Twenty years after the FAO’s landmark Livestock’s Long Shadow report, our webinar explored a crucial question:
❓ How can we transform food systems to address the intertwined crises of climate change, biodiversity loss, public health, food security and animal welfare?

🎓*Bringing together leading experts from across the food systems, animal welfare and development finance communities, the discussion examined:
🌱 How the environmental impacts of industrial livestock production have evolved over the past two decades;
💰 Why public and development finance must stop locking in unsustainable livestock systems;
🔄 How redirecting investment can accelerate the transition towards sustainable, resilient and ethical food systems;
⚖️ Why animal welfare must become a central pillar of food systems transformation.

📑 The discussion was based on the newly released report “20 Years after Livestock’s Long Shadow”, which provides a timely assessment of today’s challenges and identifies practical pathways for change.

🤝 The webinar was co-organized by the Stop Financing Factory Farming (SFFF) coalition and World Animal Justice (WAJ), chaired and moderated by Dr. Sabine Brels, WAJ Founding Director.

👏 Congrats to the outstanding speakers:
• Peter Stevenson OBE - Compassion in World Farming
• Merel van der Mark - Sinergia Animal
• Lasse Bruun, UN Foundation

🙏 Warm thanks to everyone who joined us live!
🙌 It was inspiring to see such strong interest and engagement, with over 110 participants contributing to this timely discussion on the future of our food systems.

⚖️💥 BREAKING: NEW WAJ POLICY BRIEF ON WILDLIFE CRIME DEFINITION RELEASED AHEAD OF UNCC15 🌍🚨

📢 World Animal Justice is proud to release a groundbreaking policy brief:
«Beyond Trafficking: Rethinking Wildlife Crime as a Systemic Form of Exploitation»

✍️ Authored by Dr. Meganne NATALI, Ph.D, WAJ Expert on Wildlife Crime, and official WAJ Delegate to the 15th United Nations Crime Congress (UNCC15).
🦏🐘🌳 For too long, wildlife crime has been viewed mainly as a trafficking problem.

⚠️ But wildlife crime does not begin at the border.
It starts with the illegal extraction, harvesting, possession, processing and exploitation of wild animals and plants long before they enter international trade routes. Yet these upstream crimes often remain overlooked, under-penalized, and disconnected from international enforcement efforts.

🚨 This new WAJ Policy Brief calls for a transformative shift in international law and policy:
✅ Adopt a comprehensive international definition of wildlife crime.
✅ Recognize wildlife crime as a systemic form of organized exploitation.
✅ Strengthen legal frameworks across the entire illicit supply chain.
✅ Close loopholes exploited by transnational criminal networks.
✅ Advance negotiations towards a new 5th Protocol under the UN Convention against Transnational Organized Crime (UNTOC).

🌍 As governments prepare for UNCC15 in Abu Dhabi, this brief provides concrete recommendations to better prevent, investigate and prosecute wildlife crime in all its forms.

💡 If we want to dismantle organized wildlife crime, we must stop focusing only on trafficking and start targeting the entire criminal system behind it.

💥Breaking News: WAJ Report on Animals & Crime Convergence is Out!

📢 As the international community prepares for the 15th United Nations Crime Congress (UNCC15) in Abu Dhabi (26 September–1 October 2026), World Animal Justice launches a major advocacy initiative for advancing the international recognition of animals as victims of organized crime.

⚠️ For too long, animals have remained the invisible victims of transnational criminal networks. It is time to change this.

📢 NEW WAJ EXPERT REPORT: «Animals and Crime Convergence: Towards the International Recognition of Animals as Victims of Organized Crime»

⚖️Prepared under the direction of Dr Sabine Brels, Director of World Animal Justice, the report brings together cutting-edge legal and policy analysis demonstrating the links between organized crime and animal exploitation.

It features the invaluable contributions from 2 brilliant WAJ Experts:
🐘 Dr. Meganne NATALI, Ph.D on wildlife trafficking; and
🚢 Luis Carlos Sarmiento Martínez on live animal export (Director of Proyecto ALA - Animales Latino America, official collaborator of this report).
The report will support WAJ’s advocacy at UNCC15, where Dr. Meganne Natali will represent World Animal Justice as its official delegate. 🎓

📢 Twenty years after the FAO's landmark report exposed the devastating consequences of industrial animal farming, the world faces an urgent question:
❓ Why do billions of dollars in public and development finance continue to fuel factory farming around the world?
🚨It is time to rethink the financial models that continue to fuel the industrial exploitation of animals and unsustainable food systems.

🌱 World Animal Justice believes that public finance should support a transition towards food systems that respect animals, protect ecosystems and promote human health—not perpetuate harmful factory farming.

🏛️ Multilateral Development Banks and other international financial institutions have enormous influence over the future of global agriculture. Their investments must be redirected away from factory farming, and towards sustainable, plant-rich and animal-friendly food systems, using public funds for public good.

🎙️ We are delighted that Dr Sabine Brels, Founding Director of World Animal Justice, will chair and moderate this discussion, bringing together leading international experts:
🔹 Peter Stevenson OBE – Compassion in World Farming
🔹 Francesca Gallelli – World Federation for Animals
🔹 Lasse Bruun – UN Foundation
🔹 Merel van der Mark – Sinergia Animal

💬 The webinar will feature expert presentations, a high-level panel discussion and an interactive Q&A exploring practical pathways to end public financing for factory farming and accelerate the transition towards ethical, sustainable and resilient food systems.

🙌 Join us and be part of the conversation to help shape a food system future that better protects animals 🐄, people 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 and our planet 🌍

🎉 World Animal Justice is so honoured to be a full member of Eurogroup for Animals for a second year! 🐾
🤝 The work that Eurogroup for Animals does for animals across Europe speaks for itself, and we greatly value the achievements secured this year👍
🐶 The adoption of the first EU-wide rules on the welfare of cats and dogs.
🧪 The EU Roadmap towards phasing out animal testing for chemical safety.
📢 The large-scale public consultation on the revision of the EU animal welfare legislation.
🐔 The landmark CJEU hearing concerning the Commission’s failure to deliver on its commitment to end cages following the successful End the Cage Age European Citizens’ Initiative, with the Court’s ruling still pending.

👏 Congratulations to the Eurogroup for Animals’ team and its members for these important actions aimed at strengthening animal protection and improving the enforcement of existing animal welfare legislation. ⚖️

🌱 This year, World Animal Justice is particularly active in the Common Agricultural Policy process through our Food Forward Europe initiative.
💶 We are calling for EU agricultural subsidies to comply with EU law and sustainability commitments by increasingly shifting harmful public funding away from the livestock industry, towards plant-based food production. 🌿

🐾❓ Are you an NGO willing to support a shift away from animal exploitation massively subsidized by public funds — toward greater support for plant-protein production and more accessible, affordable alternatives?

🌱 At a crucial time for the future of the EU Common Agricultural Policy (CAP 2028–2034), Food Forward Europe and partnering NGOs are calling for public funds to serve the public good: for animals, people, and the planet.

📢 Join this collective call for:
✅ More sustainable food systems
✅ Alignment with EU climate, environmental, and animal welfare goals
✅ Greater food resilience and protein autonomy

🚨 Don’t Miss this Food Forward Europe Webinar Tomorrow! 🚨
❗European agricultural subsidies still massively support animal farming, with minor support to plant-based food for human consumption.
🌱 This event will make the case for a needed shift, aligning with EU legal obligations and policy commitments for more sustainable and resilient food systems, animal welfare, climate mitigation and environmental protection.
