🌍🐾⚖️ WORLD ANIMAL DAY 2026 — ANIMALS BELONG IN GLOBAL JUSTICE. 🐘🐅🐄🐟

This feels particularly meaningful for World Animal Justice.

We have just returned from the 15th United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (UNCC15) in Abu Dhabi, where WAJ was officially represented by our expert Dulki Seethawaka. 🌐⚖️

And we brought one message to the heart of the international criminal justice community:

📢⚖️ ANIMALS ARE NOT ONLY PART OF CRIME CONVERGENCE — THEY ARE VICTIMS TOO, AND INTERNATIONAL LAW MUST PROTECT THEM.

From wildlife trafficking to illegal fishing, illicit animal trade and exploitation linked with wider transnational organized crime, animals suffer directly — yet they remain largely invisible within criminal justice responses.

⚖️ The legal response must evolve accordingly: crime prevention and criminal justice frameworks need to recognize animal exploitation, address the criminal networks profiting from it, and ensure that animal victims themselves are no longer legally invisible.

At UNCC15, WAJ advocated to change this.

🤝 Our Policy Declaration, endorsed by 37 NGOs, calls on UN Member States to recognize animal exploitation as a critical component of organized crime convergence and animals as victims of transnational criminal systems.

Today, on , our message goes even further:

⚖️🐾 THERE IS NO GLOBAL JUSTICE IF ANIMAL VICTIMS REMAIN INVISIBLE.

Our participation at UNCC15 was another step toward bringing animals — and their legal protection — where decisions about justice are made. 🌍🏛️

🌍⚖️UNCC15 is happening now in Abu Dhabi, and World Animal Justice is present to share that our Policy Declaration for the 15th United Nations Crime Congress is now endorsed by 36 NGOs from around the world. The Congress runs from 26 September to 1 October and brings together governments, criminal-justice practitioners, international organizations, academia and civil society to address current and emerging crime challenges.

❗Yet one category of victims should be considered in global crime discussions: ANIMALS.
🤝Together, we are bringing an unprecedented collective call for animals into this major global crime forum — asking that animals finally be considered within discussions on transnational organized crime, crime convergence and crime prevention.

🐾 Animals are sentient beings directly harmed by criminal systems — yet they are still too often treated only as commodities, or wildlife resources.
🔑 Our Declaration calls for animal exploitation to be recognized as a critical component of crime convergence, and for animals themselves to be acknowledged as directly harmed victims of transnational criminal systems.

And this matters for crime prevention itself.
🐘🐅 Wildlife trafficking does not operate in isolation. It intersects with wider illicit markets and organized criminal activity. A 4th UNTOC Protocol is in discussion with promising advances expected for UNTOC COP13 soon.
🐄🚢 Live animal export is an emerging crime-convergence concern. Our Declaration highlights evidence that livestock vessels transporting animals from South America may be vulnerable to infiltration by drug-trafficking operations.

🚀In just one month, World Animal Justice (WAJ) will be heading to Abu Dhabi for the 15th United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice ( ), taking place from 26 September to 1 October 2026.

⚖️ Our objective is clear: to bring animals to the heart of international discussions on crime prevention and criminal justice.

🇺🇳 WAJ will be officially represented at UNCC15 by WAJ Expert Dr Meganne NATALI, Ph.D, acting as our official delegate.

🔑Over the past months, we have been actively preparing for this major global milestone through research, legal expertise and international civil-society mobilisation:

📘 Our Expert Report — “Animals and Crime Convergence” explores two concrete dimensions of the links between animal exploitation and organised crime:

🦏 Wildlife crime — examining the need for stronger and clearer recognition of crimes affecting wild animals and their convergence with organised criminal activities.

🐄🚢 Live export of cattle — examining how the international transport and trade of live animals can expose animals to serious welfare violations and create conditions in which regulatory breaches and other illicit practices can occur across borders. This provides an important case study for UNCC15 on how legal animal exploitation can intersect with unlawful conduct, weak enforcement and transnational crime risks.

🎂 World Animal Justice turns 3 Today! 🌍⚖️🐾
💡Time to look back, reflect on where we are, and look ahead 🌟

🚀3 years ago, World Animal Justice (WAJ) was launched with one ambitious mission: to advance legal justice for animals worldwide.

🌍 Since our launch on 12 August 2023, WAJ has grown into a global legal initiative bringing together experts, NGOs and coalitions — and a community of 3,000+ followers on LinkedIn. Thank you all! 🙏

⚖️ Over these first three years, we have advocated to close major legal gaps for animals, combining legal expertise, global collaboration and innovative advocacy against major animal crimes worldwide.

Some milestones that have shaped our journey:
🤝 Building a global network for animal justice
Today, WAJ brings together 50+ experts, 20+ animal NGOs and 7 international coalitions, connecting expertise across animal law, international law, criminal justice and advocacy.

⚖️ Pioneering global criminal animal justice
WAJ has taken the lead in advancing legal pathways to ban “crimes against animality” and “zoocide” under international law — so that the gravest and most systemic crimes against animals no longer go unrecognized or unpunished.

📚 Turning legal expertise into tools for change
We have produced expert reports, policy briefs, legal databases, 10+ webinars and 20+ expert articles, including the Asian and African Animal Law Database, to empower animal advocates worldwide.

🏛️ Putting animal crimes on the global crime-prevention agenda
Ahead of the 15th United Nations Crime Congress (UNCC15), WAJ launched a major campaign on animal exploitation and organized crime convergence — producing an Expert Report on Animals & Crime Convergence, a Policy Brief on wildlife crime, and a Policy Declaration endorsed by 35+ NGOs worldwide.
Next month, WAJ will be represented at UNCC15, taking our call for stronger recognition of animal crimes directly to this major international crime-prevention forum.

🌱 Launching Food Forward Europe (FFE)
WAJ launched FFE to tackle a structural driver of animal exploitation: EU agricultural subsidies favouring livestock production going against legal obligations and policy commitments. In just months, this work has generated a major legal and policy report, an expert webinar, a Joint Statement, growing NGO collaboration and visibility in EU policy circles.

🤝 Building connections across movements
Through collaborations including Stop Financing Factory Farming, WAJ is connecting animal justice with wider food-system, climate and environmental advocacy.

📖 Twenty years after the FAO’s landmark Livestock’s Long Shadow report, our webinar explored a crucial question:
❓ How can we transform food systems to address the intertwined crises of climate change, biodiversity loss, public health, food security and animal welfare?

🎓*Bringing together leading experts from across the food systems, animal welfare and development finance communities, the discussion examined:
🌱 How the environmental impacts of industrial livestock production have evolved over the past two decades;
💰 Why public and development finance must stop locking in unsustainable livestock systems;
🔄 How redirecting investment can accelerate the transition towards sustainable, resilient and ethical food systems;
⚖️ Why animal welfare must become a central pillar of food systems transformation.

📑 The discussion was based on the newly released report “20 Years after Livestock’s Long Shadow”, which provides a timely assessment of today’s challenges and identifies practical pathways for change.

🤝 The webinar was co-organized by the Stop Financing Factory Farming (SFFF) coalition and World Animal Justice (WAJ), chaired and moderated by Dr. Sabine Brels, WAJ Founding Director.
