MESSAGE FOR CIRCULATION
Re: Prohibitions regarding the use of the United Nations name, acronym, emblem, etc.
Dear NGO Representative,
As a periodic reminder about your organization’s obligations to adhere to the
requirements for maintaining its consultative status with the UN Economic and Social
Council (ECOSOC) in good standing, kindly note the prohibitions regarding the use of
the United Nations name, acronym and emblem, including making misrepresentations
concerning your organization’s consultative status with the ECOSOC. These
requirements, as outlined below, are included in the letter that has been routinely sent
to NGOs upon being granted consultative status since 2010. Since these requirements
apply to all NGOs in consultative status with the ECOSOC, they are being circulated as
a general reminder.
Strict prohibitions against misrepresentation of consultative status
• NGOs in consultative status are NOT considered part of the United Nations
system. As such, they are not representatives or staff of the United Nations, nor
are they authorized to enter into business arrangements on behalf of the United
Nations or misuse the United Nations’ name or logo for endorsement of an
organization’s activities in any way. Furthermore, consultative status does not
entitle NGOs any privileges such as tax exemptions, diplomatic passports, travel
privileges, etc.
• NGOs in consultative status are forbidden to use the United Nations logo on their
stationery, business cards, websites, meeting banners, cars, office buildings, etc.
[Misrepresentation of consultative relationship can result in adverse
consequences for your organization.
If the organization wishes to display consultative status on its letterhead, the following
statement can be included below the name of the organization: “Organization in
(Category of consultative status) with the Economic and Social Council since (year
status granted).
To clarify further, prohibitions about the use of the UN name, acronym and emblem,
such as wearing UN grounds passes, or carrying the UN flag, etc., also apply to all
activities of your organization and its representatives. When indicating or displaying
your organization’s association with the UN, your organization should ensure that any
such statement or display may not create the misleading or erroneous impression that
your organization’s activities or views are endorsed or supported by the UN. It should
also be made clear that your organization does not represent the United Nations.
We urge you to bear this in mind when engaging in activities of your organization and
count on your organization’s cooperation with this matter.
