FEMISE -Forum EuroMéditerranéen des Instituts de Sciences Economiques FEMISE main objectives is to conduct research on priority EuroMed issues.

Moreover, reinforce and promote dialogue on economic and social policies, and deepen co-operation between different stakeholders for their mutual benefit on the two shores of the Mediterranean. What FEMISE do?

1. Conduct policy oriented research and provide recommendations with respect to socio-economic priority issues in relation to the EU-Med partnership.

2. Provide a repository of studies, methodologies and sectoral approach concerning the socio-economic reality of the Euro-Mediterranean region.

3. Provide a platform that promotes policy dialogues between different stakeholders on issues that matter for the region.

4. Establish partnerships and encourage cooperation and collaboration between economic institutions of both North and South towards the accomplishment of the Association’s objective. FEMISE research thematic areas:

our research themes are multi-disciplinary covering a variety of issues, mainly:

- Trade and EU-Med integration
- Climate Change and environment
- Growth, labor markets ,social policies and inclusiveness, private sector development
- Innovation and entrepreneurship.
- Labor markets, skills, migration and refugees

The FEMISE Annual Conference 2026 is officially underway in Tarragona!

The conference opened with welcoming remarks bringing together H.E. Ambassador Senén Florensa, Executive President of IEMed; Raed Safadi, President of FEMISE; Santiago Castellà, President of the Port Authority of Tarragona; Vale Pino Lara, Delegate for European Projects of the Provincial Government of Tarragona; and Francesc Homs, President of the Spanish Committee of LECE.

They set the tone for three days of dialogue around the challenges and opportunities shaping the Mediterranean. Across the interventions, one message stood out clearly: today’s interconnected disruptions require stronger resilience, deeper cooperation and a shared vision for the region’s future.

From strengthening production and supply chains to accelerating the green and digital transitions, the speakers highlighted the importance of innovation, knowledge, dialogue and partnerships across countries, institutions and sectors — while ensuring that no one is left behind.

As the discussions now move forward, the central question remains: how can Mediterranean economies turn disruption into an opportunity to build more resilient, innovative and inclusive economies?

🌍 Does climate change make inequality worse?
We are pleased to share Policy Brief 20: “Climate Change Vulnerability & Inequality in the Mediterranean” by Salwa Ech-charfi and Idriss El Abbassi.

Drawing on data from 16 Mediterranean countries between 1995 and 2021, this policy brief explores how climate vulnerability contributes to rising income inequality and disproportionately affects the region’s most vulnerable populations.

Key insights:
• Greater climate vulnerability leads to higher income inequality
• Food vulnerability is the strongest driver of rising inequality
• Countries with large agricultural workforces face stronger inequality impacts
• Climate shocks disproportionately affect low-income households through food price increases and income losses
• Climate change is not only an environmental challenge, but also a major social and economic one

💡 The brief calls for stronger food security measures, investments in sustainable agriculture and climate-resilient farming, targeted support for vulnerable communities, and more inclusive climate adaptation policies to ensure that no one is left behind in the green transition.
