SMILO - Small Islands Organisation

SMILO - Small Islands Organisation Committed to working with island communities for sustainable development & biodiversity 🌊🏝️🌱♻️💡👣 SMILO's community is about forty-five islands !

SMILO NGO aims to support islands of less than 150 km² that want to create initiatives to better manage their resources and biodiversity. This approach is materialised through a labelling process, which provides international recognition for islands committed to resilient human development, compatible with the environment. SMILO supports small islands located in West Africa, the Indian Ocean, Euro

pe, and the Mediterranean. www.smilo-program.org

Calling photographers & storytellers

For our 10th anniversary, we are launching a photography contest with a special focus on the 58 islands from our network. Whether you’re a resident, visitor, artist, researcher, or simply passing through — you can take part.

We’re looking for stories from within — everyday life, local knowledge, fragile balances, and quiet innovations.

🖼️ Selected photos will be featured in a travelling exhibition in Gorée (Senegal) during our 2026 meet-up at the end of the year.

🏆 Win a camera + the chance to join a SMILO field mission

2025 was about building on what already works on small islands—sharing experiences, strengthening connections, and making local solutions more visible.

From Indonesia–Tanzania coral training to Mediterranean exchanges and moments at the UN Ocean Conference in Nice, the year was shaped by collaboration.

A few highlights from 2025:
✨ 58 small islands in the network
🌱 20 in the labelling process, 1 recognised sustainable island
🤝 600 people involved

More than numbers, it was about learning from each other and moving forward together.

We’ve just spent two days with our team and our funders on the island of Porquerolles, combining a team retreat with time to connect. A simple setting, between pine trees, the sea, and the sound of cicadas in the background — the perfect way to slow down and take the time.

Around the table, conversations were open and useful. A chance to take stock of our projects — what we’re building, what’s working, what still needs improvement — and most importantly, where we want to go.

No big speeches, just concrete discussions and a shared desire to move forward together.
