SMILO NGO aims to support islands of less than 150 km² that want to create initiatives to better manage their resources and biodiversity. This approach is materialised through a labelling process, which provides international recognition for islands committed to resilient human development, compatible with the environment. The Plastic Fantastic Hackathon is here!

Ocean enthusiasts, innovators, researchers, start-ups, NGOs are all invited to submit ideas tackling marine pollution through detection, prevention and valorisation of marine litter.

Selected teams will take part in the Hackathon and work with mentors and experts to further develop their solutions.

Il y a des îles qui savent avant les autres. Des îles silencieuses, parfois oubliées des cartes touristiques, mais qui devinent les changements à venir — climatiques, sociaux, écologiques. Capraia est l’une de celles-là : une sentinelle posée dans le bleu profond du Sanctuaire Pelagos, la plus lointaine des îles de l’archipel toscan, à trente milles des côtes corses. Ici, l’urgence n’a pas dicté l’action : depuis longtemps, on cherche à mieux cohabiter avec la mer, les saisons, les espèces qui passent et celles qui restent. Et si le futur du Sanctuaire Pelagos venait de ses îles les plus discrètes ?

Il y a quelques semaines, l’île de Capraia vibrait au rythme de la , le célèbre festival du calamar qui rassemble chaque année habitants, pêcheurs, visiteurs et passionnés de gastronomie. Une belle occasion pour revenir sur notre visite de l'île de Capraia que SMILO - Small Islands Organisation accompagne depuis 2024.

♻️SMILO is looking for a Waste Management expert to conduct a study to improve waste management on Natividad Island, Baja California, Mexico .

Natividad is home to 400 residents of the ‘Buzos y Pescadores’ Fishing Cooperative, which manages all activities on the island.

Aujourd'hui, cap sur la Méditerranée pour le second épisode de notre série vidéo The Islander’s Log / Carnet de bord insulaire. Cette fois, nous jetons l’ancre au large de l’île de Saint Honorat, près de Cannes, à la rencontre du Frère Vladimir de l’Abbaye de Lérins.

Chaque épisode met en lumière des échanges avec des insulaires — des femmes et des hommes profondément attaché·e·s à la terre et à la mer — qui partagent leur parcours avec , mais aussi leur lien à leur île, leur identité et leur histoire.

Today we're setting sail for the Mediterranean for the second episode of our video series The Islander’s Log. This time, we anchor off Saint Honorat Island, near Cannes, to meet Frère Vladimir from the Abbey of Lérins.

From the challenges they’ve faced to the hopes they carry forward, these voices remind us what sustainable island living truly means.

This very first episode coincides with an exciting milestone — the italian island of Asinara just recently joining the SMILO label and approach!

More than a project, "The Islander’s Log" is a space for reflection, connection, and pride — proving once again that small islands can inspire big change.
