People can read about autism. They can study it, work with autistic children, watch documentaries and follow pages like ours. They can learn everything there is to learn on paper.
But there’s a level of understanding that only comes when autism lives in your home.
When you’re awake at 3am because your child’s day has already started. When you learn what every sound, movement and expression means from a child who can’t tell you with words.
When you celebrate things other families might never even notice. When you plan every day around sensory needs, safe foods, routines, meltdowns, communication and safety.
When you’ve cried behind a closed door, wiped your face and carried on because somebody needs you.
You don’t just learn about autism. You live it and until you’ve loved and raised an autistic child day after day, there are parts of this life you simply cannot fully understand.
That isn’t an insult. It’s just the reality, we didn’t fully understand it either until Ollie taught us.
