The image showcases the engine from the legendary OSSA 250 Monocoque 1968, a groundbreaking racing machine developed by Spanish manufacturer Ossa. This motorcycle was engineered by Eduardo Giró and famously ridden by Santiago Herrero, becoming one of the most innovative bikes in Grand Prix history.

At its core, the machine is powered by a 250cc single-cylinder two-stroke engine featuring a rotary valve induction system. This setup allowed for more precise intake timing and improved efficiency compared to traditional designs of the era. While its outright horsepower was lower than some multi-cylinder rivals, the engine delivered strong, usable performance with excellent responsiveness.

What truly set the OSSA apart was its revolutionary monocoque chassis made from magnesium alloy. Instead of using a conventional tubular frame, the bike integrated the structure into a single lightweight shell. This design dramatically increased rigidity while reducing overall weight, giving the motorcycle a significant advantage in handling, cornering stability, and aerodynamics.

Despite being underpowered on paper, the combination of lightweight construction and superior handling allowed the OSSA 250 Monocoque to compete at the highest level. Between 1968 and 1970, it secured multiple Grand Prix victories and proved that innovation could challenge even the most powerful factory machines.

Today, the OSSA 250 Monocoque is remembered as a true engineering milestone, demonstrating that intelligent design and advanced chassis concepts can outweigh raw engine power. It remains one of the most influential and admired motorcycles ever built in the history of Grand Prix racing.

The image highlights the engine used in the revolutionary OSSA 250 Monocoque, a machine that redefined racing innovation in the late 1960s. Developed by Ossa and engineered by Eduardo Giró, this motorcycle became a serious contender in Grand Prix racing thanks to its unique combination of lightweight design and efficient engine performance.

At its core is a 249cc air-cooled, single-cylinder two-stroke engine featuring a rotary disc valve induction system. This setup allowed precise control over intake timing, improving efficiency and throttle response. The engine used a 70 x 65 mm bore and stroke configuration and was fed by a 42mm Amal GP carburetor, a high-performance component widely used in racing at the time.

In terms of performance, the engine produced around 42 bhp at 11,000 rpm, which may seem modest compared to multi-cylinder rivals. However, its real strength came from its excellent power-to-weight ratio, especially when paired with the bike’s ultra-light construction. This made the OSSA incredibly agile and competitive on technical circuits.

A major part of its success was the monocoque chassis, where the frame and body were integrated into a single lightweight structure, and the engine itself acted as a load-bearing component. This design significantly improved rigidity and handling, allowing the bike to outperform more powerful competitors in corners and overall balance.

Ridden by Spanish racer Santiago Herrero, the OSSA 250 Monocoque achieved multiple Grand Prix victories between 1968 and 1970 and was widely regarded as the fastest single-cylinder race bike of its time. Tragically, Herrero lost his life during the Isle of Man TT 1970, marking a somber moment in the history of this iconic machine.

Despite its relatively lower horsepower, the OSSA proved that innovation, lightweight engineering, and smart design could challenge—and even beat—more powerful machines. Today, it remains one of the most influential and admired motorcycles in Grand Prix history.
