🌱Yesterday, we were made aware that a second eviction in just two days was taking place.

🌱We tried to reach the camp before the police closed access, but sadly we were unable to enter until after midday. As a result, people living there had no access to food yesterday morning.

🌱By the time we were finally allowed in, it was too late to set up the community hub and the vital services it provides — including WiFi, information, support, and shelter from the torrential rain that fell throughout the day.

🌱Despite these challenges, we distributed 900 nutritious meal portions provided by RCK, often in very stressful circumstances. Among those affected were many women, children, and families. Access to non-food items (NFIs) remains essential to ensuring people can meet their most basic needs every day.

🌱What is deeply concerning is the continuation of these evictions without any meaningful solutions being offered. Repeatedly taking away the little shelter and belongings people have, while providing no alternative and showing little regard for the impact, is both inadequate and unacceptable.

🌱Europe can afford to show humanity to people seeking safety.

🌱Everyone deserves dignity, protection, and compassion.

🌱We will continue to document these appalling interactions whilst offering all we can to support people on site.

During a week off, I had the opportunity to visit Istituto Comprensivo La Salle in my hometown of Parma.
For two hours, I joined a group of first-year secondary school students to explore migration routes and discuss migration as a human experience that has always been part of our shared history.
We talked about the work of ROOTS and how we support people on the move every day through projects designed to restore dignity to those seeking a better life. Along their journeys, many face significant challenges due to a lack of services, protection, and visibility.
We also reflected on the fact that Italy is often not the final destination, even though it is sometimes perceived that way. Every journey is different, every story is unique, and every person has their own needs. At ROOTS, we strive to respond to those needs with humanity and dignity.
The students also collected and donated many useful items. I then drove them 1,200 km in my van, affectionately known as “Mr. Vanzola,” to Dunkirk, where they will be distributed through our NFI distributions and shower project, supporting people on the move every day.
A huge thank you to the students and teachers for their generosity, curiosity, and engagement. It was inspiring to see such thoughtful interest in an issue that affects so many lives.

🌱Today we attempted to get onsite to set up the community hub and prepare for the food distribution. However, as we arrived near the site, we were forced to wait while an eviction was taking place and were refused access until it was over.

🌱In the middle of this, the digger — which was not being used to remove rubbish — broke a water pipe, leaving the water points unusable. Restoring access to water immediately became another urgent priority alongside setting up the hub.

🌱After locating a shop with the parts needed, a temporary repair was carried out. More work is still needed, but at least there is now water on site again.

🌱There are so many people currently on site, so when Bethlehem arrived with cold food packs, followed by RCK with an increased capacity of 900 hot, nutritious bentos, it was a very welcome sight.

🌱Despite the challenges, the crowds, and the difficult conditions at times, all of the food was distributed. Sadly, even with so many portions available, some people still went without.

🌱We are grateful to collaborate with other organisations to help ensure basic needs are met as much as possible — but it should not have to be this way. Small NGOs like ours are constantly picking up the pieces of a failing and inhumane system.

🌱Thankfully, today we had enough volunteers to make it happen.

🌱Thank you to everyone who continues to support us. 💚

🌱 We need volunteers 🌱

🌱Right now, we’re having to offer some of our services on different days instead of all at once — simply because we need more helping hands.

You could be doing anything from:
🌱digging a ditch
🌱cleaning a water point
🌱handing out hot bento meals
🌱making nappy packs
🌱restocking NFI supplies on the vans
🌱colouring in
🌱or even losing at Connect 4

🌱No matter the task, it’s all done with a smile.

🌱People arrive as strangers and leave as friends — and every single volunteer makes a real difference.

🌱We really need volunteers right now.
Could this be you?

🌱Email us - [email protected] or send us a DM.

🌱 May and June are months where we are particularly low on volunteers, any time you might have to come support our daily activities can make a huge difference! You can come as an individual or arrange to come with a group of friends, maybe even a group from work or university?

🌱We have been seeing an increasing need for food support in Dunkirk, with more families and young children arriving.

🌱RCK has been able to provide us with over 800 portions of hot, nutritious meals, and today we were especially grateful for this support. The meals come in bento-style boxes, making them easy to transport and distribute quickly—something that really helps when capacity is stretched.

🌱Alongside this, we continue to support Bethlehem with weekly food bag distributions. However, both teams are currently experiencing a shortage of volunteers, which makes it more challenging to keep everything running smoothly.

🌱It was a busy day today, with many women and children needing assistance. We truly value the collaboration we’ve built over the past few years—it makes a real difference.

🌱That said, we urgently need more volunteers for May and June to ensure we can continue providing these essential services, both independently and alongside our partner organisations.

🌱If you’re able to help, please get in touch 🌱.

🌱Sudan’s war—now in its fourth year—continues to devastate civilians, with escalating violence, widespread human rights abuses, and over 13 million people displaced, making it the largest displacement crisis in the world.
🌱Reports of killings, sexual violence, and blocked humanitarian aid highlight the urgency of the situation.

For those wanting to better understand Sudan’s history and lived experiences, these books offer valuable insight:
🌱Sudan’s Unfinished Democracy – Willow Berridge, Alex de Waal, Justin Lynch
🌱They Poured Fire On Us From The Sky – Benson Deng, Judy A. Bernstein, Alephonsion Deng, Benjamin Ajak
