🌱 NFI — NON-FOOD ITEMS. WHAT ARE THEY, AND WHY DO WE NEED THEM?

NFI stands for Non-Food Items — everyday essentials we provide to the men, women and children we support.

🌱 Demand has increased this year, and we’re struggling to keep up. We’ve run out of small bars of soap, nail clippers and nail scissors, while stocks of travel-sized toiletries are running low.

🌱 Buying these items in the quantities we need every day is costly, and we already have to limit how much each person can receive.

💚 But basic hygiene should never be a luxury.

🌱 Do you have unused hotel toiletries, spare soaps, small shampoos, shower gels or lotions tucked away in a cupboard, drawer or travel bag?

A small collection among friends, family or colleagues can make a BIG difference!

🌱 Every donation helps us provide these everyday essentials with dignity to those who need them.

🌱Please get in touch if you can donate or would like to organise a collection point.

Together, we can help ensure these basic necessities are available to everyone who needs them. 💚

💚WE NEED VOLUNTEERS! 💚
🌱After this weekend, our team will be smaller, but we still want to continue offering our services to those who need us.
🌱We urgently need more helping hands!

🌱Already in Europe and able to join us soon? This particular call is best suited to people who don’t require a visa, as we need volunteers who can get here quickly.

🌱Whether you can give a few days, a week, or longer, we would absolutely love to hear from you.

🌱Can’t make it right now? That’s okay! We’re always looking for volunteers, so there will be other opportunities to get involved.

🌱No previous experience needed — we’ll train you!

🌱You just need to be over 18, willing to work hard, and ready to be part of a compassionate, dedicated team.
Your day could be
Washing copious amounts of laundry
Digging a ditch
Litter picking ( out of ditches at times too !)
Putting up and packing down large gazebos
Like management on food distros
And possibly getting beaten at Connect 4!
It’s hard work at times but it’s meaningful work, and every pair of hands makes a difference.

🌱A look back at last month’s figures! A huge thank you to all our amazing volunteers and groups who came along to support us.
🌱Your time, dedication and generosity mean so much to us. We couldn’t do it without you!

🌱What a weekend! 🌱

🌱6 volunteers from The Depot joined us for 3 days, alongside 20 volunteers from the NEU — meaning we could run all our services simultaneously.

245 men’s showers
77 women & 25 children’s showers
Over 120 sacks of waste removed
3 shopping trolleys + 3 tyres cleared from the ditch
Games, colouring & plenty of fun

🌱Our Sunday warehouse team kept things moving too — tackling laundry and preparing hygiene supplies for the weeks ahead.

🌱But it’s about more than the practical help. It’s solidarity. It’s dignity. It’s hope. 💚

🌱People giving up their weekends, after working all week, to show up for others is something pretty special.

🌱Pizza, laughter, chaos and conversations rounded off the weekend.

🌱 We shouldn’t need to be here doing this work. People should not be left without access to basic dignity, hygiene and support but until they step up we will continue.

🌱Last weekend, we had the pleasure of welcoming back a delegation from the NEU, with members from different branches coming together in solidarity to support us and the work we do.

🌱It was a busy weekend. Thanks to our amazing volunteers, we were able to provide hot showers as well as keep the community hub open — creating a much-needed space for people to access support, connect and simply spend some time together.

🌱As always, we provided our NFI support, made even more accessible with the help of one of the NEU volunteers who speaks Urdu. Alongside this, we had our games gazebos up and running, and there was, of course, a LOT of litter picking ( 190 bags !)

🌱It shouldn’t be left to volunteers and community organisations to provide such basic services. But until things change, we are incredibly grateful for the people who choose to stand alongside us and show what solidarity looks like in practice.

🌱We also received some much-needed toiletry donations, and the clothing donated will be passed on to other organisations tomorrow, helping it reach people who need it most.

🌱There is still a huge need, but knowing we can rely on the NEU to continue standing with us means a great deal. Their ongoing support, generosity and willingness to get stuck in alongside us is something we are incredibly proud of.

🌱Solidarity isn’t just a word — it’s showing up, getting involved and standing together. And we’re grateful to everyone who does exactly that. 💚

🌱We are saddened to inform you that the deaths of two women and a 10-year-old child have been confirmed this morning.
Two other people are seriously ill.

🌱More than 100 people were on board. Another devastating shipwreck. Another loss of life.

🌱Inhumane policies kill.

🌱Just last week, in two separate incidents, three people died.
How many more people have to die before we change course?

🌱We need safe routes.

🌱 One option is to allow people to make UK asylum claims from France, with UK officials processing those claims there. This was proposed in relation to Sangatte, but the UK government did not establish such a system. In April 2002, the UK government explicitly stated that it had “no plans” to send UK immigration officials to Sangatte to process asylum applications

🌱This is not about blaming France. The UK can choose to create safe ways for people to seek protection without risking their lives crossing the Channel.

🌱The uk has already demonstrated that safe routes can be created for people fleeing war and persecution.

🌱People should not have to get into an overcrowded boat and risk death simply to ask for protection.

🌱Sunday was a busy one!

🌱We welcomed a brilliant team from Cambridge Convoy Refugee Action Groupwho, as always, arrived at just the right time.

🌱Our weekends are already packed with providing our shower service, alongside all the usual work needed in the warehouse, so having extra pairs of hands makes such a difference.

🌱The team also arrived laden with toothbrushes and toothpaste — something that is increasingly important as the site now has many more women and children, meaning the need for hygiene supplies has grown dramatically.

🌱Every donation of these essential items really does help, so thank you to everyone who continues to support us.

🌱With enough volunteers, we also managed to get out litter picking.
Lots of bags of rubbish were collected, and despite the skip on site not being suitable for the amount and type of waste, we did our best to make a real difference.

🌱We’ve recently changed the bins around the site and provided additional ones at our own cost to help people manage their waste more effectively. Seeing them being emptied regularly is a great sign that the changes are working.

🌱 A GAME CHANGER FOR OUR COMMUNITY HUB!

🌱Last year, we were gifted a large battery system which allowed us to stop using a generator at our hub — reducing fuel use, emissions and noise while giving us a more sustainable way to provide essential power.

🌱As demand for charging increased, we needed more capacity, particularly for fast charging.

💚 Thanks to the incredible generosity of Monnerech Hëlleft asbl and via Catch a Smile we have been gifted another battery system!

🌱We’ve also modified our van to safely transport, protect and operate the whole system — and we’re delighted to say…

🌱IT’S ALL OPERATIONAL! 🌱

🌱We can now provide more regular and fast charging, while keeping our Wi-Fi and TV running.

🌱For us, this isn’t just about batteries and electricity.

🌱A charged phone means staying connected.
🌱Wi-Fi means access to information and support.
🌱And being connected can make a real difference to someone’s life.
