Interreg Europe brings regional and local governments together to share innovative and sustainable solutions to regional development challenges

The INTERREG EUROPE programme aims to improve the implementation of regional development policies and programmes, in particular programmes for Investment for Growth and Jobs and European Territorial Cooperation (ETC) programmes. By co-financing projects and a Policy Learning Platform it allows regional and local public authoriti

es and other players of regional relevance across Europe to exchange practices and ideas on the way public policies work, and thereby find solutions to improve their strategies for their own citizens. Six themes were selected in order to make the best use of limited funds: Smart, Green, Connected, Social, Citizens, or Governance.

♻️ Are you working on circular economy in the construction sector?

We are looking for experienced policymakers, practitioners and experts to join our upcoming Peer Review on the circular economy in the construction sector, taking place on 21–22 October 2026 in Saint-Brieuc, France 🇫🇷

Together with the Brittany Region and its regional partners, we will explore how public authorities can help build more resource-efficient, resilient and sustainable construction ecosystems.

We are particularly looking for peers with experience in:

🔹 Structuring circular construction ecosystems and value chains
🔹 Developing governance models that foster collaboration and trust
🔹 Using public procurement and other policy instruments to stimulate demand for reused and bio-based materials
🔹 Managing innovation and reducing implementation risks
🔹 Connecting circular economy objectives with innovation policies, Smart Specialisation Strategies, skills development and centres of excellence

As a peer, you will have the opportunity to exchange with policymakers and experts from across Europe, share your experience, and help develop practical recommendations for the region.

✈️ Travel and accommodation costs can be covered in accordance with Interreg Europe rules, and participating organisations may also be eligible for a contribution to support staff time.

🌍 Borders may separate countries—but they don't have to divide everyday life.

As the twin cities of Frankfurt (Oder) and Słubice strengthen their cooperation on cross-border mobility, they are taking the next step: exploring how a European Grouping of Territorial Cooperation (EGTC) can help turn shared ambitions into lasting action. 🤝

During a peer review organised by the Interreg Europe Policy Learning Platform on 16–17 June 2026, European experts shared their experience on what it takes to build an effective and sustainable EGTC.

Together, they explored questions that many cross-border territories face:
🚍 How should an EGTC be governed?
🏛️ What responsibilities should it take on?
💶 How can it secure long-term funding?
🔗 And how can it support practical projects, such as improving cross-border public transport?

Drawing on experiences from EGTCs across Europe, the peer review produced practical recommendations to help Frankfurt (Oder) and Słubice strengthen their partnership and build a governance model fit for the future.

🇪🇺 Rethinking how regions engage with Europe

How can a region make the most of European cooperation and ensure that EU opportunities translate into real impact on the ground?

This was the focus of the peer review organised by the Interreg Europe Policy Learning Platform on 1–2 July 2026 for the Thuringian State Chancellery, Germany, exploring the reorientation of Thuringia’s European policy strategy.

The exchange brought together European peers and regional stakeholders to reflect on how to strengthen:
🤝 coordination between regional priorities and EU initiatives
💡support for stakeholders seeking to engage in European programmes
📌cooperation with European regions and networks
🗣️ the visibility and understanding of Europe among citizens

One key conclusion emerged from the discussions: European programmes should be seen not only as funding opportunities, but as strategic tools to support regional transformation, innovation and cooperation.

🌍 How can regions turn global goals into local action?

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) provide a shared framework for addressing global challenges — but their real impact depends on how they are translated into regional policies and decisions.

On 7–8 July 2026, the Interreg Europe Policy Learning Platform hosted a peer review for the Sibiu County Council, hosted by the Mannheim, to explore how the Sibiu County Development Strategy 2030 can better integrate the SDGs.

The focus was not on creating a new strategy, but on strengthening the tools and processes behind it:
📊 improving monitoring and reporting systems
💡 supporting evidence-based decision-making
💶 linking budgets more closely with strategic priorities
🤝 building organisational capacity for long-term change

Through exchanges with European peers and experts, Sibiu explored how the SDGs can become a practical compass for policy implementation and investment planning.

The key message: sustainable development starts when ambitions are embedded into everyday governance.

🎯 How can local authorities anticipate tomorrow's skills needs instead of reacting to them?

Fingal County Council is showing how a proactive, evidence-based approach can help regions prepare their workforce for the future.

As part of the Interreg Europe SKYLA project, Fingal developed the Future Fingal: Fingal Skills Strategy 2024–2029—Ireland's first local authority-led skills strategy. By combining labour market forecasting, stakeholder collaboration and European policy learning, the strategy helps address skills shortages while supporting the digital and green transitions.

The result? A model that is already inspiring other local authorities and demonstrating how regions can strengthen their competitiveness through smarter skills policies.
