Meet Cécile Dubernet, political scientist and peace studies specialist.

In this eight-part video series, she invites us to understand peace not as the absence of war, but as an ongoing movement towards greater justice, dialogue and solidarity.

She reflects on how violence can be transformed without reproducing it; the roles of citizens, civil society and institutions; non-violence and civilian peacebuilding; and the capacity of art to make other futures imaginable.

Her perspective provides an essential framework for Creating Despite War, an international exhibition bringing together artists whose work emerges from contexts of war, displacement and crisis.

“Peace is not a state of the world, but a movement within it.”
— Cécile Dubernet

Drawing, testimony and memory.
For this webinar in the Art to Face series, we are delighted to bring together artists, authors and practitioners whose work explores how comics and graphic narratives can make lived experience visible, preserve memory and open spaces for dialogue.
In contexts of conflict, displacement and crisis, visual storytelling can communicate what words alone sometimes cannot. It can carry testimony, document individual and collective histories, and make complex realities more accessible — while raising essential ethical questions about the representation of violence, trauma and exile.

Join us for a conversation with Joel Alessandra, comic artist, illustrator and author; Amal Khaleefa, researcher and author of Memories of a Refugee; Grégory El Marto, artist, illustrator and graphic storyteller; and Laure Garancher, co-founder of The Ink Link, an NGO using comics for social change.
Moderated by Albane Buriel, Art to Face.

Meet Pascal Boniface, geopolitical analyst and Director of IRIS - Institut de relations internationales et stratégiques.
In this four-part video series, he offers accessible tools for understanding contemporary conflicts. He reflects on the erosion of international law, the human cost of war, and the illusion that military force can provide lasting political solutions.
Pascal Boniface also reminds us that geopolitics is not only for experts: understanding the world is part of being a citizen.
His perspective provides an introductory framework for Creating Despite War, an international exhibition bringing together artists whose work emerges from contexts of war, displacement and crisis.
“Geopolitics is not just for specialists; it concerns every citizen.”

Understanding Afghanistan with Georges Lefeuvre

In this seven-part video series, Georges Lefeuvre, a specialist in Afghanistan and Pakistan, offers key perspectives on Afghanistan’s contemporary realities.
He explores the return of the Taliban, the legacy of the Durand Line and the tensions it continues to fuel between Afghanistan and Pakistan. He also reflects on the restrictions imposed on women, the country’s cultural life, and possible paths towards a more peaceful regional future.
His perspective accompanies the work of Afghan photographer Farzana Wahidy, whose photographs preserve the memory of lives, rights and everyday worlds threatened by war, displacement and exile.
Because understanding the contexts in which art is created is also part of listening to the voices that emerge from them.

“The more oppressed a society is, the more it needs to create in order to save itself, in a sense.”

Thread, needle, memory and dialogue.
For this webinar in the Art to Face series, we are honoured to welcome Colectiva (Des)tejiendo Miradas, a Colombian collective whose work brings together textile artivism, community care, research and peacebuilding.
For nine years, the collective has explored how textile practices can open spaces for listening, shared memory and difficult dialogue in contexts marked by armed conflict and social suffering.
How can creative practices strengthen psychosocial well-being? How can they foster social cohesion? And what can thread and needle make possible when words alone feel insufficient?
Join us for a conversation with Beatriz Elena Arias López, Berena Torres Marín, María Teresa Buitrago, Paola Chávez and Laura Coral, moderated by Teresa Torres de Eça and Aimee Kelley.

World Su***de Prevention Day — 10 September

On World Su***de Prevention Day, we are pleased to share this reflection from Simeon K*m Akuraga, Clinical Psychologist and MHPSS Specialist in Nigeria.

He speaks about the importance of changing the narrative around su***de: reducing stigma, recognising distress, creating space for honest conversations and ensuring that people can access appropriate support.

Talking about su***de can be difficult. But listening without judgment, asking with care and encouraging someone to seek help can make a meaningful difference.

If you are experiencing emotional distress, or are worried about someone, please reach out to a trusted person, a mental-health professional or an emergency service in your country.

You are not alone.

Meet Farzana Wahidy, an Afghan photographer whose work has documented the lives and changing realities of Afghan women for more than twenty years.
Through her archives and her project 100 Afghan Women, Farzana challenges the stereotypical images often produced about Afghan women. Her work offers another perspective: that of an Afghan woman telling the stories of other Afghan women, their lives, their resistance and the transformations they have experienced since 2001.

Her recent work, Missing, reflects on the photographs she has been unable to take since 2021. An empty photographic frame becomes a way of speaking about exile, visa restrictions, statelessness and the impossibility of returning to Afghanistan as an Afghan woman.

This five-part series explores Farzana Wahidy’s artistic approach, the stories that run through her work, and what it means to create despite war, Taliban rule, exile and displacement.

Understanding Ukraine with Romain Huët
In this six-part video series, Romain Huët, ethnographer, specialist in contemporary forms of violence, lecturer at Université Rennes 2 and co-founder of the podcast Cracker l'époque, offers key perspectives on the war in Ukraine.

He traces the conflict back to longer histories of competing imperialisms, while showing how Ukrainian society has organised itself to survive, sustain everyday life and respond to war. He also reflects on its ambivalent effects: new forms of solidarity and action, but also loss, disorientation and a narrowing of the space for critical voices.

His perspective accompanies the posthumous tribute to Ukrainian artist Davyd Chychkan, whose work and commitments are presented through the words of his friend and comrade, Lesik.
Because understanding the contexts in which art is created is also part of listening to the voices that emerge from them.

“Organising a way of seeing reality, however atrocious it may be, is absolutely necessary in order to make sense of it.”
- Romain Huët

Meet Davyd Chychkan, a Ukrainian artist, anarcho-syndicalist and activist from Kyiv.
Through drawing, painting, posters, street art and performance, Davyd brought together artistic creation and political commitment. He preferred to call himself a “drawer”: someone who made political posters for anarcho-syndicalism. His work gave form to ideas of freedom, equality, solidarity and resistance to fascism.
In 2024, Davyd volunteered to join the Ukrainian Armed Forces. He was killed on the Zaporizhzhia front in August 2025, aged 39.

“Davyd never separated himself, as an intellectual or cultural actor, from his people.”
— Leisik

This seven-part series is a posthumous tribute to Davyd Chychkan by Leisik, his friend and comrade. It explores Davyd’s artistic practice, political commitments and the legacy he leaves behind.

Understanding Palestine with Jihane Sfeir
In this six-part video series, historian of the contemporary Arab world Jihane Sfeir provides key historical, political and cultural perspectives on Palestine and Gaza: the legacy of the Nakba, occupation, colonisation, forced displacement, the actors shaping the conflict, and the conditions for a just and lasting peace.

Her perspective accompanies the work of Palestinian artists Samaa Abuallaban and Nada Rajab, whose practices preserve stories, document everyday realities and resist erasure.
Because understanding the contexts in which art is created is also part of listening to the voices that emerge from them.
