😢

We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of D-Day veteran Henry Rice at the age of 100.

Henry was one of the veterans to feature in 'The Lucky Ones Grow Old' portrait exhibition, and we welcomed him to the museum on a number of occasions.

Henry served in the Royal Navy and was a signaller aboard HMS Eastway as part of the Normandy landings. After the Normandy landings he served in the Mediterranean before going to the Far East.

Our thoughts go out to his friends and family. Rest in peace Henry.

🇬🇧 Remembering Corporal John Peter “Max” Rodley

Born Hans Rosenfeld in Germany in 1924, John Peter Rodley fled to Britain with his sister in 1939 as a child refugee. He later joined the British Army and served with the 21st Independent Parachute Company during the Second World War.

Rodley took part in Allied operations in North Africa, Italy, and the Netherlands. In September 1944, he was involved in Operation Market Garden, the Allied attempt to secure key bridges in the Netherlands.

Tragically, he was killed on 23 September 1944 during the Battle of Arnhem, aged just 20.

His life tells a remarkable story of displacement, service, and sacrifice during one of history’s most difficult periods.

Today, we remember Corporal John Peter Rodley and honour his memory. Lest we forget. 🇬🇧
