Pax Romana IMCS - MIEC Pax Romana International Movement of Catholic Students

IMCS Pax Romana is the International Movement of Catholic Students which brings together over 80 diverse national federations, associations, and movements of Catholic university and tertiary students from six regions. Since 1921, when it was founded under the name of Pax Romana with the aim of promoting peace and justice at the global level, IMCS has been helping in the holistic formation of stude

nts around the globe. Since 1949, IMCS has been advocating on behalf of its members as a non-governmental organisation (NGO) in consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), the United Nations Department of Public Information (DPI), and United Nations Education Science and Culture Organization (UNESCO). IMCS is also active with regional inter-governmental and international bodies, such as the International Labour Organisation and the World Bank to voice the concerns of youth. IMCS represents Catholic students within the Church as an international association of the lay Catholic faithful with a special relationship to the Pontifical Council for the Laity and the Secretariat of State of the Holy See. Inspired by Jesus' teachings and the Gospel values, IMCS encourages students to live a Spirituality in Action, linking faith, intellect and service of others through praying, reflecting, and acting on issues at all levels of society.

A meaningful moment at the Vatican on 21 May 2026, following Pope Leo XIV’s address to the Moderators of International Associations of the Faithful, Ecclesial Movements, and New Communities.

William Nokrek, President of Pax Romana IMCS-MIEC, and Plückhahn, European Coordinator, JECI-MIEC European Coordination, representing IMCS Pax Romana, had the opportunity to greet the Holy Father and briefly share about the mission of Pax Romana IMCS among students worldwide.

As the first Indigenous President of Pax Romana IMCS-MIEC, William presented Pope Leo XIV with a traditional Garo Uttoriyo, a handwoven ceremonial cloth of honor from the Garo Indigenous People. The gesture symbolized respect for Indigenous cultures and reaffirmed Pax Romana IMCS-MIEC’s commitment to Indigenous student formation, advocacy, and accompaniment worldwide.

William also shared with Pope Leo XIV about the upcoming Global CAFE from 13-19 July at International Youth Training Centre-IYTC, and sought the Holy Father’s blessings and prayers for all participants and organizers.

We are grateful for the Holy Father’s encouragement, especially his call for governance rooted in service, transparency, shared responsibility, and communion within the Church.

The International Team of Pax Romana IMCS-MIEC, together with the global Pax Romana family, mourns the passing of 𝐃𝐫. 𝐙𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐦𝐨 𝐄. 𝐋𝐞𝐞 (Philippines), former member of the Pax Romana IMCS International Team (1978-1982).

As a member of the International Team, Dr. Lee contributed to the life and mission of the global student movement, helping strengthen international solidarity and the commitment of students to faith, justice, peace, and human dignity.

Throughout his life, he remained dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge, ethical reflection, and service to society. He became one of the Philippines' most respected philosophers, educators, and academic leaders, inspiring generations of students through his scholarship, teaching, and leadership.

Today, we remember with gratitude his contributions to Pax Romana IMCS-MIEC and his lifelong commitment to forming critical minds and compassionate hearts. His life stands as a testament to the enduring values of our movement: dialogue, solidarity, intellectual engagement, and service to the common good.

We extend our deepest condolences to his family, loved ones, colleagues, former students, and to the Pax Romana community in the Philippines and around the world.

May the Lord welcome him into His eternal peace, and may his memory continue to inspire present and future generations of students and young leaders across the globe.

In communion and solidarity,

The International Team of Pax Romana IMCS-MIEC

Pax Romana IMCS - MIEC in DRC Celebrates its 72nd Anniversary and the 105th Anniversary of Pax Romana IMCS - MIEC
The International Movement of Catholic Students in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MIEC-RDCONGO) celebrated, last Sunday at ISTA/Kinshasa, the 72nd anniversary of its presence in the DRC as well as the 105th anniversary of MIEC-PAX ROMANA worldwide.
The commemorative event was marked by a Eucharistic celebration presided over by Rev. Fr. Alain-Joseph LOMANDJA, Secretary of the Episcopal Commission for the Apostolate of the Laity (CEAL) of the National Episcopal Conference of Congo (CENCO). Several former members of the movement, including Professor Pierre LOHOHOLA, André BEKAMBO, Jean-Baptiste NDUNDU, Alain KIPA, Éphrem SOMBE, and Jean-Marie MAZAMBI, also shared their testimonies during the celebration.
Through their speeches, these prominent figures retraced the history of MIEC at both national and international levels, while highlighting the challenges faced over the years and the future prospects for Catholic student youth in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The Federal Bureau of MIEC-DRC praised the commitment of former members, supporters, and provincial coordinations of MIEC-DRCONGO, which organized various activities across the country to give this celebration a truly national dimension.

“Dear brothers and sisters, continue to live your mission with fidelity, communion, and a spirit of service, walking together in the life of the Church.”
— Pope Leo XIV

Mr. William Nokrek, International President of Pax Romana IMCS - MIEC, and Ms. Plückhahn, European Coordinator of JECI-MIEC European Coordination and member of the Advocacy Team of IMCS Pax Romana, represented Pax Romana IMCS-MIEC at the Annual Meeting with Moderators of International Associations of the Faithful, Church Movements, and New Communities organized by the Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life at the Vatican.

Together with representatives of ecclesial movements and associations from around the world, the gathering reflected on governance, leadership, transparency, synodality, communion, accountability, and the mission of ecclesial associations and movements in the Church today. Discussions also addressed important challenges facing movements and associations, including sustainability, youth participation, volunteer engagement, and collaboration with ecclesiastical authorities.

A meaningful highlight of the meeting was the greeting and message from Pope Leo XIV, encouraging movements and communities to strengthen unity, dialogue, responsibility, and service within the life and mission of the Church.

As Pax Romana IMCS-MIEC, we reaffirm our commitment to accompanying students and young people, empowering them to become witnesses of peace, justice, solidarity, and hope in our global society. 🌍🤍

In a historic gathering from the halls of the African Union to the Don Bosco Centre, International Secretary General Mr. Fasika Lachore Laba joined 30 professionals and 16 IMCS students to champion the belief that "the mission of the Church is a mission for all" while reimagining the laity's role in building the "Africa We Want."
ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia: From 30 April to 2 May 2026, Catholic academics, professionals, and student leaders convened for a landmark ICMICA-Pax Romana Special Regional Session. Under the theme "Reimagining the Role of Catholic Lay in Africa," the group integrated diplomacy and strategic planning to define a new "spirituality of action."
Diplomacy and the Common Good The session opened with an immersion visit to the African Union (AU) Headquarters. Welcomed by Rev. Fr. Louison Emerick Bissila Mbila, C.S.Sp., 23 delegates explored how professionals and students can contribute to the "common good" within continental governance and peacebuilding.
Faith in a World in Turmoil His Eminence Cardinal Berhaneyesus Demerew Souraphiel opened the meeting, urging professionals to be the "salt of Africa."
Empowering the Next Generation A defining feature was the participation of the International Movement of Catholic Students (IMCS) Pax Romana. Led by International Secretary General Mr. Fasika Lachore, 16 students from Addis Ababa University engaged with experts on the youth joblessness crisis—noting that while 11 million youth enter the market annually, only 3 million formal jobs are created.
At the Closing Mass, Archbishop Brian Udaigwe (Apostolic Nuncio to Ethiopia) delivered the Pope’s blessings, charging the 30 participants from 11 countries to "shine in the world" by engaging actively in public and political life.
