In Pakistan, thousands of electricity workers held rallies in 13 cities against the government's plan to privatise power distribution companies (DISCOs). Abdul Latif Nizamani, President of All Pakistan WAPDA Hydro Electric Workers Union said the government's reliance on IMF directives is putting workers' jobs and energy security at risk, and that the protest movement will widen if demands are not met.

In Australia, PSI affiliate ETU addressed the National Press Club in Canberra, making the case for "Sovereign Power" — a publicly-owned renewable energy entity to power Australian industry. ETU National Secretary, Michael Wright, said a future made in Australia must be powered by Australia.

Unions in both the countries have one shared message: energy is too important to leave to the market.

WORKERS SUCCESSFULLY DEFEND GENDER EQUALITY AT THE INTERNATIONAL LABOUR CONFERENCE!

Maddy Northam, PSI’s LGBTIQA+ Coordinating Committee co-chair, CPSU ACT Regional Secretary and ACTU representative, was a key figure in the tripartite drafting committee that successfully preserved gender equality as a human right and commitments to intersectionality at the International Labour Organization this week in Geneva.

The ILO’s first discussion on gender in the workplace in years risked having gender equality severely undermined by the Trump administration and its right-wing ally, Argentinian President Javier Milei.

Thankfully, Maddy and her PSI colleague Florence Taruvinga, head of the Energy Sector Workers’ Union of Zimbabwe (ESWUZ), were able to work alongside progressive governments and other committed worker delegates at the ILO to defend equality and human rights, standing up for the world’s public sector workers — 70% of whom are women.

Delegations from five Nepali trade unions met PSI General Secretary Daniel Bertossa in Geneva this week.

They were there to raise a pressing concern: the Nepal government has deregistered 12 public sector unions in the civil services, health sector and public sector.

The meeting is part of the unions' efforts to build international solidarity against the deregistration.

PSI, along with its affiliates, is responding through a legal challenge at the national level. PSI has also filed a case with the International Labour Organization and is engaged in international solidarity actions.

The delegations represented Nepal Civil Service Employee's Union, Arghakahnachi NTUC-Nepal Trade Union Congress, All Nepal Trade Union Federation (ANTUF), South Asian Regional Trade Union Council (SARTUC) and GEFONT-General Federation of Nepalese Trade Unions

"Working people, acting in solidarity, to build a world worth living in — for us all. That is what hope looks like."

That's how PSI General Secretary Daniel Bertossa closed his address to the International Labour Conference today — pointing to public service workers already doing the work:

🇸🇪 Sweden — workers refusing tech tools used to report migrants seeking healthcare.
🇺🇸 USA — workers winning back thousands of civil servants fired under the failed DOGE project.
🇰🇷 South Korea — workers on the streets defending parliament and democracy.

Hope is a verb. 🌍 ✊

Electricity workers across Sindh province took to the streets against government's plans to privatise power distribution companies.

Workers marched simultaneously in Hyderabad, Larkana, Mirpurkhas and Badin under the banner of All Pakistan WAPDA Hydro Electric Workers Union. Their demands:

🔹Withdrawal of privatisation plans
🔹Regularisation of contract employees
🔹Clearance of long-pending promotions
🔹End to outsourcing of technical posts

Union leaders warned that privatisation would mean job losses, higher electricity bills and the handover of public assets to private interests. They also announced a two-day tool-down strike.

WAPDA workers have long maintained that public sector companies deliver electricity more efficiently and at lower cost than private operators. Evidence shows that last 30 years of privatisation in Pakistan's power sector has delivered windfall profits for private companies and crushing tariffs for ordinary citizens.

Selling off distribution companies will only deepen the crisis.

At the International Labour Conference, Hernán Doval of CTM Argentina and CONTRAM-PSI set out what local and regional government workers across Latin America are fighting for: decent wages, collective bargaining, freedom of association and an end to precarious work.

“This is the banner we raise, the programme we defend, and the struggle we sustain.”
