The late Gérard Tardy never sought recognition for his generosity. His grace was as profound as his benevolence. A week ago, when some of us contemplated over naming a programme or an award in his honour, Anne Tardy reminded us, “He wouldn’t have liked that.” Those words capture Gérard’s essence – a man whose life was defined not by accolades, but by character, selflessness, and humility.

Gérard Tardy first came to Bhutan in 1999, beginning what would become a lifelong commitment to its people. What started as a journey of curiosity grew into a deep devotion. He believed in Bhutanese youth even before they believed in themselves, and from that faith emerged the Loden Entrepreneurship Programme.

From the outset, Gérard Tardy’s involvement was deeply personal. He was never content to remain a distant benefactor. Instead, he taught, mentored, and worked alongside the entrepreneurs he supported. Over the years, he guided more than 320 beneficiaries, becoming to many a paternal presence – a steady believer whose faith in their potential often preceded their own. His counsel was wise, his expectations exacting, and his encouragement unfailingly generous. In his constancy, he embodied a leadership that was both demanding and tender.

The true measure of Gérard Tardy’s life is reflected in the far-reaching impact of his kindness. Those he once guided now guide others. Scholarship recipients have returned to strengthen their communities. The global network he cultivated continues to embody the spirit of generosity. His legacy is not set in stone but rather lives on in the people he encountered. He remains, without doubt, a continuum of opportunity, aspiration, and compassion.

Today, Gérard Tardy’s name lives on through his family, friends and the countless lives he touched. His absence is felt across borders, yet the work he set in motion endures – through programmes, scholarships, and relationships that will continue to persist for generations.

In remembrance of our esteemed trustee, Loden Foundation has inaugurated a memorial donation page to perpetuate the endeavours to which Gérard Tardy devoted his life with unwavering dedication. Through this initiative, future generations will be empowered to embody the compassion and conviction that were the hallmarks of his character.

Le 3 février 2026, la Fondation Loden a accueilli Lama Matthieu Ricard dans ses nouveaux bureaux. Son arrivée, discrète et sans ostentation, a marqué la première visite depuis le déménagement de la fondation, une présence inaugurale qui a immédiatement conféré une certaine solennité à cet espace rénové. Le Dr Karma Phuntsho, accompagné de l'équipe de la Fondation Loden, l'a reçu avec une chaleur mesurée. La matinée s'est déroulée au fil d'échanges attentifs et d'une prise de conscience partagée que l'importance de cette journée dépassait le simple cadre d'une réunion.

Par la suite, Lama Matthieu Ricard a longuement évoqué Gérard Tardy, rappelant avec familiarité et précision l'engagement indéfectible du défunt administrateur envers la mission de la fondation et la relation étroite qui les unissait. Ces réflexions ont souligné l'interdépendance profonde des êtres humains – comment le mentorat, l'amitié et un but commun se répercutent pour façonner les institutions et les communautés.

Au milieu de la conversation, un thème central s'est imposé avec force : la vocation de la fondation à développer le potentiel humain en accord avec l'idéal du bodhisattva défendu par son fondateur, le Dr Karma Phuntsho, et incarné dans la pratique même de Lama Ricard. La discussion a maintes fois insisté sur le fait que le développement des compétences ne se limite pas à une simple formation technique, mais relève d'un cheminement moral et spirituel – une éducation du cœur et de l'esprit qui permet à chacun de servir autrui. La présence de Lama Matthieu Ricard a renforcé cette conviction, présentant l'action de la fondation comme une expression de compassion plutôt que d'ambition institutionnelle.

À la suite de ces échanges, Lama Matthieu Ricard a accompagné la délégation de Loden au Simtokha Dzong, où, en compagnie d'entrepreneurs et d'universitaires, la fondation a observé une journée de prières solennelles, marquant le vingt-et-unième jour depuis le décès de Gérard Tardy.

À la fin de cette journée, les participants ont ressenti une affirmation à la fois discrète et indéniable. Les vingt et un jours de prières au Simtokha Dzong, les souvenirs de la générosité de Gérard Tardy et les conseils compatissants de Lama Ricard ont formé ensemble un arc de consécration : la perte reconnue, l’héritage honoré et le but réaffirmé.
