REFLECTING ON A UNIFORM — During my return visit to the Chancellorsville (Virginia) Battlefield back in March, I was amazed to see the uniform remains that belonged to William Hightower of the 23rd Virginia Infantry on display at the Visitor Center. At 20 years of age, Hightower was severely wounded in the leg during the intense fighting there on May 3, 1863. For an initial direction at care, doctors undertook a dangerous procedure. First, they cut off his pant leg. Then, they amputated his shattered limb at the thigh. This was a severe and hopeful attempt at saving his life. They were unsuccessful. About two weeks after the battle, Hightower died from his wounds. Unfortunately, William’s experience was similar to thousands of other young soldiers on both sides…

Captain Robert E. Lee Jr. was a soldier, farmer, and biographer of his father, General Robert E. Lee.

When the War for Southern Independence broke out in 1861, his father and his two older brothers, Custis and Rooney, all chose to serve Virginia in the Confederate Army. To his mother's dismay, Rob joined them in 1862, enlisting in the Rockbridge Artillery as a private.

During the Battle of Sharpsburg in September 1862, young Robert watched his father ride up to his artillery battery, which had already been heavily engaged. Junior stood by expecting to hear a few words of affection from his father, but Lee did not recognize his own son, hidden by the grime of black powder on his face. When Junior finally spoke up to ask if they would be thrown back into the fight, the general recognized him by his voice. "Yes, my son. You must do what you can to drive those people back," Lee said.
God bless the Lee family of Old Virginia!
