The Story So Far

SOS Chai began on the ‘Jungle’ refugee camp in Calais, serving hot drinks and food to hundreds of refugees each day. When the camp was closed in late 2016, we relocated our converted ambulance (nick-named “Mr T”) to Caen, where a growing migrant population was seeking shelter in the city.

An Expanding Need. With hundreds of refugees now living in Caen and its port of Ouistreham, we see an increasing need for food and related support. With the right vehicle we can meet these needs in both locations and provide two or more meals each week.

Everybody loves a food truck. Hot food, creatively-presented, served right there in the street when you need it. What could be better? For refugees, the answer is a Food-Freedom-and-Forgiveness-truck. The migrant community we are working with in Caen, Normandy, certainly need food. For many the hot meal we provide is one of just two or three they have access to each week: but these young men far from home need so much more than food alone. They need to know that they are seen. That there is hope. That someone cares. Our teams not only provide a vital meal: they take time to show love, to communicate the value the creator places on each person. Since April 2017 we have delivered a hot meal to between 30 and 150 refugees each week. In 2018 we plan to expand this service to multiple locations - and to do that we need a new vehicle. Will you help us buy and equip France’s first Food-Freedom-and-Forgiveness-Truck?

The Right Truck. Our original vehicle - a converted 1989 ambulance - is no longer adequate for the needs of this ministry. Our aim is to buy and equip a new vehicle: a 2005 or later van with less than 100,000 miles, which we will custom-fit for the service of meals and drinks. We estimate the cost of purchase and fitting at €6000 to €8000. A generous donor has offered matched funding for the first $2,500 raised in the USA for this need. This means that every $1.00 you give will add $2.00 to our appeal, moving us even faster towards the Food-Freedom-and-Forgiveness-Truck we so urgently need. Donations are administered by iTeams USA, a charter member of the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability (ECFA), with the highest ratings available from GuideStar and Charity Navigator. Our goal is to raise these funds by the end of February 2018, so that a new vehicle can begin operations in March.
