Surfrider Foundation Europe

Surfrider Foundation Europe http://www.surfrider.eu It is essential to respect and protect this natural heritage for ourselves and future generations.

Dedicated to the protection of oceans and coastlines, Surfrider Foundation Europe lobbies, informs, and collaborates to preserve this exceptional natural heritage. Seas and oceans are threatened by strong anthropogenic pressures of artificialisation via coastal structures, urbanization, water pollution and macro-waste (plastic marine trash) which are undermining the quality of our

environment. This is the message our local chapters broadcast all over Europe. Dynamic and determined, they lead local actions to raise awareness to protect our coastlines into the future. In the field, our independent laboratories and our "Keepers of the Coast" document and make available coastline conditions. They inform our surveillance network to establish current and ongoing conditions of our beaches, as well as acting locally to protect water resources from pollution and artificialisation of the coastlines.

🚭 After years of monitoring pollution, cigarette butts remain the first item counted in our waste collections.

On the occasion of World No To***co Day, Surfrider Foundation Europe is calling for a ban across Europe on:
❌ cigarette filters
❌ ni****ne pouches
❌ disposable electronic ci******es (“puffs”)

Why?
Because these products, become waste after just a few minutes of use and generate a harmful pollution

In 2025, our citizen clean-up campaigns recorded more than 587,000 cigarette butts in the environment. And behind every cigarette butt: thousands of toxic substances, plastic, and long-lasting pollution.

🌍 Throughout June, our volunteers will be mobilizing across Europe to collect, count, and expose this avoidable pollution.

With Retrace!, Surfrider uses citizen science to empower every citizen to be an agent of change! 🕵️

Our program makes it easy to collect waste on European beaches and riverbanks using a scientific protocol. This protocol helps gather valuable data to enrich scientific knowledge and influence policymakers and industry leaders to take direct action at the source and promote stricter regulations.

Each participant, in their own way, makes a tangible contribution to protecting the environment and the ocean while helping to shape environmental laws!

Every year, hundreds of volunteers collect, sort, and quantify the waste that pollutes our aquatic environments to allow us to build a valuable database that helps us better understand and combat water pollution. 🕵️

In 2025, we collected and quantified over 1 million pieces of waste through 1,629 waste collections, thanks to the mobilization of 17,172 participants!

Field data has played a key role in Surfrider’s advocacy efforts to reduce single-use plastics at the source. In particular, it has contributed to the adoption of the European Single-Use Plastics (SUP) Directive, which aims to ban or reduce certain products that are among the most commonly found in the environment. 🙌

Help us go even further! Join a collection on April 18 and 19 and take action with us ➡️ https://retrace.surfrider.eu/en/interactive-map/?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=retracelaunch&utm_id=%23413
