The Coral Planters is a French non-profit charity aiming to develop projects for the protection, conservation, preservation and restoration of coral reefs, in French or foreign territories. If we don't act today, 90% of coral reefs will disappear by 2050 due to human activity (fishing, tourism, coral exploitation, pollution). Yet coral reefs are home to 25% of all marine life, and play an essentia

l role in climate regulation, as well as acting as a coastal bulwark against violent climatic phenomena (cyclones, typhoons, hurricanes). We are therefore directly concerned. The Coral Planters association's mission is to protect marine ecosystems and raise awareness of the importance of protecting the ocean. Using a patented technique for creating artificial reefs, we restore coral reefs and replant coral in degraded areas. Our objectives: to intensify our restoration projects through new partnerships, as well as our education and public awareness initiatives. En ce 1er juin, les récifs coralliens sont à l’honneur (comme tous les jours avec The Coral Planters 🪸)

Ils couvrent moins de 1 % de la surface des océans, mais abritent près de 25 % de la biodiversité marine. En résumé, ils sont indispensables pour un important nombre d’espèces marines.

Pourtant, ils disparaissent à un rythme alarmant sous l’effet du réchauffement climatique, de la pollution et des pressions humaines.

Avec nos partenaires terrains aux quatre coin des océans, nous travaillons chaque jour pour restaurer ces écosystèmes essentiels et redonner une place au vivant sous l’eau.

Et en ce moment même, nos équipes sont en Indonésie sur une nouvelle zone de restauration. Objectif : planter plus de 1 500 coraux en moins de 10 jours.

MULALA MARINE SANCTUARY
One square kilometer marine protected area.
Without them, none of this would be possible.

THE INFRASTRUCTURE
An equipped dive center. A compressor for dives. A workshop to build structures. The necessary infrastructure for a large-scale project.

MULALA MARINE SANCTUARY
Une aire marine protégée d’un kilomètre carré.
Sans eux, rien de tout cela ne serait possible.

L’INFRASTRUCTURE

Why nurseries in mozambique?
Across our 7 restoration zones, Mozambique is the only site where we use coral nurseries.

Why?

THE USUAL PROTOCOL
Normally, we plant directly on structures.
We harvest fragments from healthy colonies. We fix them on structures that form a reef. We let them develop.
Less manipulation. Less maintenance.
Simple. Effective.

THE MOZAMBIQUE PROBLEM
In Mozambique, we can’t do that.
There are very few reefs healthy enough for us to harvest from without weakening them further.
Degradation is too advanced. Healthy colonies are rare.
We can’t take the risk of further weakening the few remaining healthy corals.

THE SOLUTION: ADDING A STEP
We harvest fragments from rare healthy colonies.
We first plant them on a nursery.
They develop in optimal conditions for several months.
Then we fragment them again.

THE MULTIPLICATION
Once they reach the right size, we fragment them again.
Each fragment can be divided into several new fragments.
300 initial fragments allow the production of thousands of fragments to replant on structures.
Yes, it adds manipulation.
Yes, it adds maintenance.
But it gives us a stable base.
We can develop corals without continuing to harvest from already weakened reefs.

FIELD ADAPTATION
We don’t replicate the same protocol everywhere.
We observe.
We analyze.
We adjust.
In Mozambique, nurseries are essential.
Elsewhere, not necessarily.
Each site has its specificities.

Sébastien lands in Mozambique.
His third trip in two years on this project.
The first time was in January 2024. To meet the Mulala Marine Sanctuary teams. Understand the site. Assess the restoration potential.

Then in 2025, official launch.
🪸 7 nurseries installed.
🪸 87 pyramid structures built.
🪸 8,000 corals planted.

Today, he returns for 14 days to evaluate. See the corals’ health after one year. Understand what works. Adjust what needs to be.

Puis en 2025, lancement officiel.

Aujourd’hui, il revient pour 14 jours.
Pas pour planter de nouveaux coraux.
Mais pour évaluer. Voir l’état de santé des coraux après un an. Comprendre ce qui fonctionne. Ajuster ce qui doit l’être.

Le Mulala Marine Sanctuary, c’est pas juste un site de plongée.

MOZAMBIQUE: 1 YEAR OF RESTORATION
Exactly one year ago, we planted our first corals in Mulala Bay.
April 2025 - April 2026.

12 months later:

Mulala Bay is not random.

A partner who was already there. Who knows the terrain. Who protects these waters.

We don’t plant anywhere. We plant where it makes sense. Where we can build something that lasts.
