Iméra hosted Netias, the European Network of Institutes for Advanced Study 🌍

On October 12th and October 13th, Iméra had the pleasure of hosting the Netias Annual Meeting in Marseille! Two days full of exchanges, first at the Pharo, then at Iméra. This meeting gave the network of 25 Institutes for Advanced Study across Europe the opportunity to:

🔸 Discuss new initiatives and members with Olivier Bouin (Netias/IEA Paris) and Cristina Garsten (SCAS), network communications with Mylène Trouvé (Netias / RFIEA) and a special Constructive Advanced Thinking (CAT) programme session with Ellen Werner (SCAS).

🔸 Elect Ralf von den Hoff (Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies) as the new network President.

🔸 Give the floor to four thematic working groups: Funding with Olivier Bouin; Arts and Sciences with Constance Moréteau (Iméra); Scholars at Risk with Sophie Halart (IEA Nantes) and Mario Wimmer (Collegium Helveticum); and Enabling Interdisciplinarity with Joanna Page (CRASSH) and Sebastian Bonhoeffer (Collegium Helveticum).

🔸 Josune Urrutia Asua, Iméra Senior Fellow 2025-2026, also hosted a Drawing Session to get IASs thinking differently about challenges they are facing and how to address them.

📚 Qui sont les emprunteuses et emprunteurs des bibliothèques de Marseille ? Où circulent les livres et les documents ?

En mêlant mécanique des fluides, sciences des bibliothèques et cartographie, Maxime Nicolas, amU fellow 2025-2026, vous propose de découvrir comment les bibliothèques inondent la ville grâce à des cartes géographiques créées pendant sa résidence !

Avec l’aide de la Bibliothèque de l’Alcazar et de l’Institut Géographique National, Maxime organise un après-midi autour de l’histoire de la cartographie et des mouvements des documents des bibliothèques de Marseille.

Au programme : conférences, escape game et découvertes des fonds cartographiques de l’Alcazar !

Save the Date | Festival interdisciplinaire des Sciences et des Arts 2026 - « Humain / Animal. Une aventure commune ? » - La 7ᵉ édition du Festival interdisciplinaire des Sciences et des Arts d’Aix Marseille Université vous attend du 15 au 18 septembre !

Et si l’on repensait notre lien aux animaux ? 🦒 🐗 🐁 🐜

Organisé par Aix Marseille Université et ses partenaires, le festival explore cette année nos relations, souvent ambivalentes, avec les animaux : de l'histoire biologique aux imaginaires culturels, jusqu'aux grands débats politiques d'aujourd'hui.

En croisant sciences, arts et savoirs de terrain, il interroge les frontières entre humain et animal : alliances, conflits, vulnérabilités partagées, et transformation de nos regards sur le vivant. Toutes les disciplines sont invitées à éclairer cette « aventure commune », qu'elle concerne des animaux domestiques ou sauvages, réels ou imaginaires.

Pendant quatre jours, venez assister aux conférences, projections, performances, spectacles, ateliers, concerts, expositions, débats et rencontres proposés par 120 intervenantes et intervenants issus de 40 disciplines.

5 fellowship positions are available across our 4 research programmes: Arts & Sciences: Indisciplined Knowledge, Interdisciplinary Dialogues, Mediterranean, and Necessary Utopias.

Available residency durations: 10 months (September 2027 – June 2028) or 5 months (September 2027 – January 2028 or February – June 2028)

Any interested researcher may apply for only one position among those offered.
Former Iméra residents may only reapply at least 5 years after their initial research stay.

OPEN STUDIO | Visual artist Josune Urrutia Asua, 2025-2026 Senior fellow at Iméra, is hosting an open studio to share the research and creative process developed during her residency this year.

This will be an opportunity to explore her workspace, engage with her practice and discover “Notes for a Visual Essay on Drawing”, an evolving collection of notes, drawings, fragments and reflections developed throughout these months of research and creation. This project approaches drawing as a tool for research, knowledge production and mediation.

🇫🇷 L’artiste visuelle Josune Urrutia Asua, Senior fellow 2025-2026 à l’Iméra, ouvrira les portes de son atelier pour partager son travail de recherche et son processus créatif menés au cours de cette année de résidence.

Ce sera l’occasion de découvrir son espace de travail, d’échanger autour de sa pratique et de parcourir « Notes pour un essai visuel sur le dessin », un ensemble en cours de notes, dessins, fragments et réflexions né au fil de ces mois de recherche et de création. Ce projet envisage le dessin comme un outil de recherche, de connaissance et de médiation.

OPEN CALL | Are you a scholar under 35 based outside of France and currently under contract with a university for a postdoctoral fellowship? If so, you can apply to our 2026-2027 postdoc residency call!

Spend three months of your research contract in unique work and living settings, where scientists and artists from all over the world and all disciplines significantly transform the most common frameworks for thought and action.

Le printemps est arrivé à l’Iméra🌼☀️

Ces dernières années, les arbres et les plantes du jardin de l’Iméra dépérissaient en raison du réchauffement climatique et de maladies incurables… Au printemps/été 2025, les responsables des espaces verts d’Aix Marseille Université ont planté des arbres, des arbustes et des plantes vivaces résistants à la sécheresse afin de créer une prairie fleurie pour attirer les pollinisateurs.

Un an plus t**d, les fellows, leurs familles, le personnel et les invités peuvent profiter du résultat final !

Cette revégétalisation participe à la création d’îlots de fraîcheur en ville, à la diminution de la pollution de l’air, à la lutte contre l’érosion du sol ou encore au développement de la biodiversité.

🌍 L’Iméra est fier d’avoir été invité à participer au projet ALTER-MEDITERRANEE proposé par Aix-Marseille Université dans le cadre de la Saison Méditerranée 2026.

Ce projet se veut un véritable espace d’expérimentation : co-créations arts/sciences, récits plurilingues, cartographies collaboratives, ateliers étudiants… Autant d’initiatives qui répondent aux défis climatiques, sociaux et de justice environnementale.

Après une première journée au MucemLab le 18 mai, le Pharo accueille une matinée de dialogues autour de la question « À quoi ressemble une Méditerranée racontée aujourd’hui par les sciences sociales et les arts ? »

PROJECTION 🎬| Jeff Daniel Silva, résident à l’Iméra durant l’année académique 2018-2019, a coréalisé le film MARE SAPIENS, avec Aurélie Darbouret, qui sera présenté en première mondiale au Festival International Jean Rouch le 8 mai 2026 à 11h au Musée du quai Branly dans le cadre du programme « Cap sur l’environnement ».
