Today the Uto Ni Yalo Trust had the pleasure of hosting students from Monash Universityโs Global Immersion Guarantee (GIG) programme for a morning of immersive learning about the Trust and its activities.
The morning began with a classroom presentation at the University of the South Pacific's (USP) Marine Campus on the Uto ni Yaloโs mission, the legacy of traditional voyaging, and the importance of ocean stewardship in our region. Afterwards, the group headed down to the National Sailing Centre where they got to board the canoe for a firsthand experience of voyaging. The learning continued onshore, as the students were also introduced to key elements of traditional seamanship, including shunting and tying essential knots.
Participants of the GIG programme are in Fiji to learn from local leaders about how theyโre working to address the human impact on the environment. This engagement allowed them to experience their learnings on sustainability and cultural revival in action.
Vinaka vakalevu to the Monash GIG cohort for their enthusiasm and openness to learning more about how the Uto Ni Yalo protects our oceans and our indigenous knowledge!
If youโre passionate about ocean stewardship, traditional sailing, and environmental conservation, get involved and help shape the future of the Trust!
