🌍✨ Celebrating Human Rights Day!✨🌍

Today, we recognize and uplift the rights and dignity of persons living with psychosocial disabilities across the world. Human Rights Day reminds us that everyone, regardless of mental health status, deserves compassion, respect, and equality.

💪 Limitations do not define our worth.
🧠 Adequate support leads to empowerment.
🤝 Inclusion breaks down stigma and builds connection.

Let’s commit to ending prejudice and promoting a society where persons with psychosocial disabilities can live openly and be heard loudly.

Today, on International Day of Persons with Disabilities, we amplify the United Nations theme for 2025: "Fostering disability inclusive societies for advancing social progress."

To truly achieve this goal, we must broaden our understanding of disability beyond the visible and address the systemic exclusion faced by those with Psychosocial Disabilities.

The Invisible Barrier to Progress
Psychosocial disabilities stem not from a mental health condition alone (such as severe anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, or PTSD), but from the interaction of that condition with rigid and stigmatizing social barriers.

The hurdles faced by this community are rarely physical ramps; they are attitudinal barriers, inflexible workplace structures, and silence. A society that is built on the assumption that everyone's mind works the same way is a society that actively disables people. We cannot claim to be "advancing social progress" if we leave the mind behind.

What Inclusion Looks Like for Psychosocial Disability
Fostering an inclusive society means more than providing accommodations; it means valuing the resilience and unique insights that come from lived experience.
For people with psychosocial disabilities, true inclusion requires that we focus on:

Psychological Safety: Creating environments where disclosure is safe, non-judgmental, and not a career risk. We must replace assumptions with the non-negotiable question: “How can I support you?”

Cognitive Accessibility: Ensuring clarity in communication, providing flexibility in working arrangements, and creating quiet spaces. Flexibility is not a privilege; it is the accessibility standard for cognitive well-being.

Lived Experience Leadership: Recognizing that navigating a world not designed for your brain requires immense adaptability and problem-solving skills—qualities that are assets to any team or community.

We stand with those who navigate invisible barriers every day. Your resilience is leadership. Your perspective is the blueprint for a better, more empathetic society. Let's work together to dismantle the stigma and create a world where all minds can thrive.

PSA Joins Pacific Disability Forum’s 16 Days of Disability Activism

Suva, Fiji – November 24, 2025 – Psychiatric Survivors Association Fiji (PSA), represented by Mr. Aca Tamanitokula, joined the Pacific Disability Forum (PDF) in launching the 16 Days of Disability Activism. The campaign runs from November 25 to December 10, alongside the global movement against gender-based violence.

PSA highlighted the importance of including psychosocial disability in efforts for equality, safety, and resilience especially during crises. PDF CEO Sainimili Tawake emphasized this year’s International Day of Persons with Disabilities theme:

“Fostering disability-inclusive societies for advancing social progress.”

The launch at Lautoka Waterfront Hotel also featured training for Disability Humanitarian Resource Teams, strengthening community preparedness and response. PSA stands with OPDs across the Pacific to ensure psychiatric survivors’ voices are heard in building inclusive societies.

🌍 Strengthening Inclusive Systems for All

Psychiatric Survivors Association Fiji was proud to be represented by two of our dedicated staff at the recent Social Protection Workshop hosted in collaboration with Partnerships for Social Protection (P4SP). This timely gathering brought together regional actors to explore pathways for more inclusive, resilient, and rights-based social protection systems across the Pacific.

Our team contributed lived experience perspectives and grassroots insights ensuring that disability, mental health, and marginalized communities remain central to policy design and implementation.

🛠️ From parametric insurance to community-led safety nets, we’re committed to shaping systems that uphold dignity, agency, and accessibility for all.

Vinaka vakalevu to P4SP and all partners for fostering this space of learning, collaboration, and action.

Invisible Disabilities Week (19–25 October): Honoring What’s Unseen, Upholding What’s Lived

Not all disabilities are visible but every story matters.

This week, we shine a light on the lived realities of those navigating chronic pain, mental health conditions, neurodivergence, trauma, and other invisible disabilities. These experiences may not be seen, but they shape every step, every breath, every decision.

At Psychiatric Survivors Association Fiji, we affirm:

• 🧠 That mental health is health and deserves dignity, access, and care.
• 🌊 That invisible disabilities are real, valid, and worthy of recognition in policy, services, and everyday life.
• 🪷 That our communities must lead with compassion, cultural wisdom, and inclusive systems that honor every body and every story.

Let this week be a call to listen without judgment, advocate without hesitation, and build spaces where invisibility does not mean exclusion.

To our members living with invisible disabilities: we see you. We honor your strength. We walk beside you.
