The fight against Investor-State Dispute Settlement (ISDS) is slowly seeping further into the Pacific through deep-sea mining developments and contractual agreements.

📣A webinar hosted by Australian Fair Trade and Investment Network ( ) shared outcomes from the April Transition away from fossil fuels conference in Santa Marta, Colombia, where 57 governments and civil society groups identified ISDS as a key barrier to effective climate action.

Pacific Network on Globalisation ( ) Deputy Coordinator Adam Wolfenden said: "Some Pacific Island countries like Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, Tonga, and the Republic of the Marshall Islands have investor agreements containing ISDS. The majority of these agreements were finalised back in the 1980s or 1990s and no longer reflect the current needs of governments."

Across the Pacific, we are bound together by a single ocean, an ocean that carries our histories, our identities, and our shared responsibility to protect it.

It is this unity that defines us; not as isolated nations, but as one people connected by water and purpose.

Within this shared ocean, West Papua stands as part of our collective story, reminding us that our commitment to defending and protecting these waters is not passive, but a living act of solidarity, strength, and unity across the Pacific.

“No nuclear weapons in Australia means protecting the Pacific.”

At the ICAN Australia's No Nuclear Weapons in Australia webinar, Pacific Regional Non-Governmental Organisations Chair and Pacific Network on Globalisation Coordinator Joey Tau reminded us that the Pacific’s “blue line” is not just history, it is a living commitment to a nuclear-free region.

From the legacy of nuclear testing to today’s growing military ambitions, Pacific civil society continues to call for what it always has: Denuclearisation. Demilitarisation. Decolonisation.

These are not separate conversations, they are one.

As the region marks 40 years of the , the message remains clear: the Pacific is not a testing ground, not a military corridor, and not a nuclear pathway.

The convened over the past 3 days at Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat in Suva, Fiji, bringing together civil society representatives, including members of the Pacific Regional Non-Governmental Organisation Alliance , in person and online.

PRNGO Alliance Chair and Coordinator, Joey Tau, acknowledged the on-going engagement in regionalism, adding that, "the Alliance comes into this Forum in a spirit of partnership and shared responsibility. We are not here simply to critique regionalism from the outside.

"We are here because we care deeply about the future of Pacific cooperation and because we believe that stronger relationships between civil society, PIFS and CROP agencies are essential if regionalism is to remain credible, relevant and connected to our people.

"We are not here to call each other out. We are here to call each other in."

The Regional CSO forum, comes at a particularly important time as Pacific civil society look ahead to the regional calendar over the coming months and towards the Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting in Palau.

This Forum highlights the continued commitment of Pacific regional civil society to contribute to and influence regional governance and cooperation, as well as advance the principles of deeper regionalism articulated in the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent in all Thematic Areas.

📣 : Pacific civil society cautions ISA of ‘bluewashing’ deep-sea mining

Pacific civil society groups are calling for transparency and inclusion in regional deep-sea mining talks, as environmental stewardship concerns and poor economic prospects accompany the corporate push.

This cautionary call comes on the first day of the International Seabed Authority's (ISA) Pacific Small Island Developing States regional workshop, the so-called ‘Deep Seabed Sustainable Blue Growth Initiative’ in Suva, Fiji.

Olgeta, please noted that PANG/PRNGO will release the below on our socials and to media houses in Suva 👇

Media Correction Advisory:

We acknowledge and take responsibility for the incorrect reference to media reports stating the exclusion of Pacific civil society organisations at the ISA Pacific - SIDS Regional Workshop on Deep Seabed Sustainable Blue Growth Initiative, held in Suva, Fiji, at the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat.

Whilst Pacific civil society welcomes the opportunity to engage as observers to this regional ISA workshop, we maintain the call for meaningful and participatory engagement.

: As Pacific leaders conclude the inaugural in Papua New Guinea , civil society is calling for urgent action to turn ocean commitments into enforceable national laws, particularly on deep-sea mining (DSM), where concerns over environmental impacts continue to grow.

“We urge leaders to recommit to the MSG’s position on deep-sea mining, to translate regional commitments into binding domestic legislation, consider a regional moratorium on deep-sea mining exploration and exploitation, and strengthen cooperation toward a unified and approach,” PANG Coordinator Joey Tau stated.

Recently, 57 governments and civil society groups gathered in the city of Santa Marta, Colombia, to discuss practical steps toward a just transition away from fossil fuels, identifying investor-state dispute settlement (ISDS) mechanisms as a key barrier to climate action.

As fossil fuel companies continue suing governments over climate policies, this conversation is more urgent than ever.

Hear from our Deputy Coordinator, Adam Wolfenden and other experts in the field as they unpack the outcomes of the Santa Marta discussions and explore the implications for Australia, the Pacific Islands, and Indigenous rights.

📢 : Although French authorities have confirmed that provincial elections will be held by the end of June 2026, the situation in Kanaky New Caledonia requires continued vigilance.

These elections must take place no later than 28 June 2026, in order to restore institutional stability and legitimacy, and to bring an end to a period of serious democratic uncertainty.

We call for strengthened regional solidarity across Oceania, grounded in our shared histories of decolonisation and our collective aspiration for a true “Ocean of Peace,” where the sovereignty and self-determination of all peoples are fully respected.

The future of Kanaky New Caledonia is inseparable from this shared vision of dignity.

We therefore urge France to honour its decolonisation commitments and to respect the history and aspirations of Pacific peoples and nations.
