🌿 IUCN Oceania recently convened its second Members meeting of 2026, bringing together Members from across the region to connect, share updates, and strengthen collaboration in support of nature and people. As the heart of the Union, IUCN Members play a vital role in shaping conservation action, influencing policy, and driving collective impact across .

Discussions focused on strengthening member engagement, supporting the implementation of IUCN resolutions in the region, improving the use of the IUCN Engage platform, and exploring future governance and collaboration mechanisms, including National Committees and regional coordination structures. Members also received updates on upcoming opportunities to engage, including the upcoming Contributions for Nature Platform webinar and the next Oceania Members Meeting.

Together, our Members continue to drive meaningful action for a more sustainable and resilient Pacific.

🌊 On this , we celebrate the ocean that connects, sustains, and inspires the peoples of the Pacific.

From providing food and livelihoods to supporting culture, biodiversity, and climate resilience, healthy oceans are essential to our shared future.

Across the Cook Islands, IUCN is working with national partners through the Pacific Bioscapes Programme to strengthen ocean stewardship, build local capacity, and support informed decision-making for the sustainable management of marine resources.

Together, we are helping ensure that the Pacific's ocean heritage continues to benefit both people and nature for generations to come.

🌿 Happy World Environment Day!

Today, we celebrate the people, communities, and partners working every day to protect the natural world that sustains us all.

Across and the , IUCN is supporting locally led conservation through initiatives such as SOMACORE and COLORS, helping communities strengthen stewardship of their marine ecosystems while advancing global standards like the IUCN Green List.

These efforts demonstrate that when traditional knowledge, science, and community leadership come together, we can build a future where both people and nature thrive. Together, let's continue investing in healthy ecosystems for resilient communities and future generations.

🌏 IUCN is excited to be participating in this week’s in Uzbekistan, where global leaders, Indigenous Peoples, civil society, businesses, and development partners are coming together to accelerate action for people and nature.

We are also proud to celebrate the approval of nearly US$23 million in new GEF funding for IUCN-implemented projects that will address biodiversity loss and strengthen climate resilience across India, Indonesia, Mongolia, Tunisia, and the Pacific.

Of particular significance for Oceania is the approval of the Ridge to Reef Ecosystem Restoration in Solomon Islands (R2R-ERSI) project. The initiative will support the restoration of degraded forests, freshwater and coastal ecosystems, helping to improve biodiversity conservation, restore ecosystem functions, and strengthen resilience for communities that depend on healthy natural resources.

As an IUCN-implemented GEF project, this investment highlights the growing recognition of Pacific-led conservation action and the critical role of the Solomon Islands in advancing global biodiversity and climate goals.

🌿 As we gear up for World Environment Day, a by Tariq Ahmad highlights the importance of looking beyond simple output tracking to measure the true impact of Nature-based Solutions.

Drawing on the IUCN Global Standard for Nature-based Solutions, the blog explores how monitoring biodiversity outcomes, community benefits, inclusive governance, and adaptive learning can help ensure conservation actions deliver lasting benefits for both people and nature.

Did you know that soil β€” home to 59% of Earth's species β€” remains one of our least understood ecosystems?

A new report by IUCN and Conservation International, published in Oryx, reveals a striking knowledge gap: of 8,500+ soil-dependent species assessed on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Speciesβ„’, 20% are threatened with extinction, and another 20% are so poorly studied they can't even be classified.

The report calls for coordinated global action: a dedicated IUCN SSC Soil Biota Working Group, stronger collaboration between regional and international bodies, and better knowledge-sharing with governments, landholders, and the public.

Healthy soil underpins food security, biodiversity, and climate resilience. Protecting it starts with understanding it.
