Promoting local talent.
BAJITA. Hatched from the humble coconut groves of Qamea Island tikina Laucala this artist transitioned from the subsistence life of copra and yaqona farming (ta niu and tei yaqona) and beach de mer fishing (nunu dri) and most importantly 'singing and drinking' (sigidrigi) entertainment at a local resort (Matagi Island Resort) at $2 to $5 a night during tourist's dinner times; meke with the Togo meke wesi group once a week.
Thirty odd years later; BAJITA's theme song is reminiscent of his so called heritage totem bird Manutabu (of Ca'auvilivili, Qaraniyaku Laucala Cakaudrove); name of his five-piece band that entertains on a hired basis mainly in Sydney over the last 10 or so years. From the humble beginnings of a hired sigidrigi guitar to now manager of MOTUI SOUND STUDIOS; this Cakaudrove artist, using his solo title BAJITA and singles title is now available on various platforms. MOTUI Mist is now the sigidrigi band's brand name; also launching from the studio, has entertained the Fijian community over the past decade through 'charity performances' for fundraisings - PLAYING FOR FREE. For example, hosting Nautosolo and Senibuasala groups and many others including Christian denominational groups during their past tours to Australia, support to great artists, the likes of Simi Rova and many more during their early days to the present; and particularly a few Sydney Catholic community's fundraising efforts in support of monetary requests from Fiji such as Korolevu church, Nailili church and many more. Worth mentioning to his Catholic church in the village of Togo, Qamea in which Manutabu and through this artists connections to the Sydney Catholic community raised $5K for the Togo Church. This funded carpets and other material costs, including food and yaqona expenses for the Togo Catholic community preparing for the church opening in 2018.
Our HUMBLE REQUEST - Giving back to this humble musician in the form of a 'LIKE' and 'SUBSCRIBE' or just opening the link to this number or video above is the least of your gesture we much appreciate. Compensates the artists efforts and behind the scenes sacrifices. Skills require thousands of manhours practising, live performance, ruthless critiques and many more hidden costs and stressful episodes.
When you open the video on You Tube, you are promoting this local artist's music, respecting his humble beginnings and elevating the recognition of garage recording studios that gives to the local or wider community.
Many more to follow - watch this space. Manutabu, Motui Mist or Rogo Soqo will be performing close where you are sitting (just look the names up on YOUTUBE) while enjoying your bowl after a good days 'cici niu' at the setting of the sun. Or drop us a line they may just be travelling and entertaining near you as a mobile crew to promote folk music.
