WCS recently supported a week-long Business Management and Bookkeeping Training in Navunievu facilitated by the Ministry of Commerce and Business Development, bringing together thirty (30) youths to strengthen their knowledge and skills in cooperative management, bookkeeping, and small business development.

The training was conducted under the Climate Adaptation and Protected Areas Initiative, which aims to create alternative livelihood opportunities for communities while helping reduce fishing pressure on marine resources.

Participants were introduced to key areas such as business management, record keeping, leadership, and cooperative operations, equipping them with practical skills to support income-generating activities within their community.

The training also provided youths with a better understanding of the importance of cooperatives, proper bookkeeping practices, teamwork, and accountability in running a successful business initiative.

WCS acknowledges the partnership and support of the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) and Canadaโ€™s International Development โ€“ Global Affairs Canada for supporting initiatives that empower rural youths and strengthen community resilience.

Ratu Sir Lala Sukuna is remembered as one of Fijiโ€™s greatest visionaries, a leader who understood the deep connection between people, land, and future generations. While he is widely known for helping establish the Native Land Trust system to safeguard iTaukei land, his vision also reflected the importance of managing land wisely to sustain livelihoods and communities. He believed that land should be protected, cared for, and used responsibly for the benefit of present and future generations. Today, that legacy continues through conservation efforts across Fiji.

At WCS-Fiji, our work to support integrated reef-to-ridge management, restoring and safeguarding forests and climate resilient reefs, reflects the same principle that healthy ecosystems support healthy communities.

WCS today convened the CAPA Project Wrap-Up and Handover Session with representatives from CAPA communities across the districts of Namalata, Dawasamu, Nakorotubu, Bureta, Kubulau, and Bua.

The session provided an opportunity to reflect on the projectโ€™s achievements, acknowledge the contributions of partners and government stakeholders, and confirm post-project roles and responsibilities to ensure the continuity of sustainable marine and terrestrial resource management initiatives.

It also marked the official handover of the WCS CAPA Project, reinforcing stakeholder ownership, promoting the sustainability of project outcomes, and strengthening ongoing collaboration in conservation and watershed management efforts.

Discussions also focused on strengthening connections between communities and relevant government stakeholders to support, sustain, and build upon the activities and initiatives implemented under the CAPA Project.

In addition, a Watershed Fund Dialogue was held with community representatives to discuss how the fund can best support local communities moving forward. We also facilitated the socialization of the Fisheries Management Rules with government partners, including the review of Fisheries Management Rules for the districts of Bureta, Bua, and Nakorotubu to support future fishing and licensing integration.

We acknowledge and thank all stakeholders who participated in todayโ€™s session, including representatives from the Ministry of Forestry - Fiji Ministry of Fisheries, Fiji, Ministry of Agriculture, Waterways and Sugar Industry Fiji, Ministry of itaukei Affairs, and the Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management.

At , WCS-Fiji is contributing to global discussions on locally led climate adaptation, drawing on lessons from the AQUADAPT project in Cakaudrove, Fiji.

Our work demonstrates how natureโ€‘based solutions (NbS) can be integrated into communityโ€‘based aquaculture, linking pearl oyster farming with ecosystem restoration to deliver biodiversity, food security, and climate resilience benefits.

A key takeaway is that effective adaptation requires leadership from Indigenous Peoples and local communities (IPLCs). Through cooperative governance structures and rightsโ€‘based approaches, AQUADAPT highlights the importance of building trust, strengthening local institutions, and supporting community ownership.

The project also underscores the critical role of gender equality, with women actively participating in aquaculture operations, data collection, and decisionโ€‘making processes, contributing to more inclusive and sustainable outcomes.

At CBA20, WCS-Fiji and Pacific partners are advocating for adaptation approaches that are inclusive, grounded in nature, and truly locally led.

Last week, our team carried out a drone survey at revegetation sites in the Districts of Namalata, Dawasamu, Nakorotubu, Kubulau and Bua under the Climate Adaptation and Protected Areas Initiative.

We captured high resolution aerial imagery and LiDAR data to support ongoing monitoring of our landscapes restoration efforts.

By combining technology with on the ground conservation work, weโ€™re strengthening our ability to safeguard and restore important terrestrial landscapes.

WCS convened a workshop today to get user feedback on a new tool called Global Pollution Watch, designed to make pollution data more accessible and actionable, providing a platform to guide efforts to reduce land-based sources of pollution on coral reef ecosystems.

The workshop was led by WCS Water Pollution Program Lead, Dr. Amelia Wenger. Dr. Wenger said, โ€œThis tool will make it much easier to act on sources of pollution where it matters most for coral reefs.โ€

This new decision support tool that will support managers, scientists and policy makers to visualize and assess water pollution risks on coral reef ecosystems and will be instrumental for Environment Impact Assessment and conservation work.

This platform is being developed with support from Coral Research & Development Accelerator Platform (CORDAP), in partnership with The University of Queensland, Sparkgeo and Fluvio.

The tool will be officially launched at International Coral Reef Symposium (ICRS) conference by the International Coral Reef Society this year.

The workshop was attended by the Ministry of Fisheries, Fiji, WWF Pacific, Centre for Sustainable Futures-USP, Pacific Blue Foundation, Pacific Ocean Litter Youth Project-POLYP.

WCS-Fiji today convened a workshop to introduce the Kiwa WISH+ spatial decision support tool and its use in prioritising integrated watershed management and public health interventions in Melanesian watersheds. The tool was developed in partnership with The University of Queensland.

The workshop brought together representatives from the Ministry of Health & Medical Services - Fiji, Ministry of Forestry - Fiji, Ministry of Agriculture, Waterways and Sugar Industry Fiji,
and other key stakeholders, giving participants the chance to explore different watershed challenges, test possible responses to disease risks, and better understand key outputs such as risk maps and community and environmental indicators. These activities showed how the tool can support practical planning and decision-making.

WCS-Fijiโ€™s Terrestrial Manager, Akanisi Caginitoba, says, โ€œthe aim of the tool is to strengthen water and public health planning while providing solutions that can be scaled across Fiji, Papua New Guinea, and the Solomon Islands.โ€

Participants also shared feedback on the toolโ€™s design, ease of use, and relevance to policy, helping to improve its effectiveness in supporting integrated water management and health planning.

Meet 20-year-old Senijieli Nataro of Raviravi Village, Kubulau โ€“ one of the many young leaders stepping up to protect their vanua.

Senijieli has planted trees across three mataqali lands in Navatu and Raviravi villages, contributing directly to local restoration efforts.

His commitment reflects the growing role of youth in climate action, conservation, and community resilience.

Through initiatives like the CAPA and Kiwa WISH+ projects, young people like Senijieli are helping restore degraded lands, safeguard biodiversity, and shape a more resilient future for their communities.
