Introducing Field Ready’s Cassava Harvester! Field Ready recently partnered with the Fijian Ministry of Agriculture to create a simple to use, build and modify tool to speed up cassava harvesting. Cassava is a hardy and nutrient rich staple crop for many South Pacific nations. It's an extremely flexible crop that allows farmers to grow it for both subsistence and commercial purposes.

However, it is difficult to harvest cassava using heavy machinery. Heavy machinery damages some of the crop, wasting valuable food resources for small scale farmers and rural communities. Heavy machines are also difficult to source and repair. Consequently, most cassava harvesting is done by hand and machete. This method is slow and strenuous on farmers’ bodies. Field Ready’s Cassava Harvester reduces strain and speeds up harvesting. Additionally, the tool can be made locally using available materials.

For Mrs Roden, a paraplegic and disability advocate in Fiji, a narrow timber plank once stood between her and her community. It was unsafe, difficult to cross, and kept her isolated from friends and neighbors.

Today, that barrier has been replaced with a safe bridge built by the Field Ready team, restoring her ability to move freely and reconnect with the people around her.

With support from the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives, Field Ready is also producing wheelchair and crutch parts locally and bringing repair services to rural communities across Fiji.

Because mobility should never depend on where you live.

Sourcing roller tips for white canes has long been a challenge across the Pacific for persons with visual impairments — a struggle that United Blind Persons of Fiji (UBPF) and their thousands of members know all too well.

Thankfully, UBPF reached out to Field Ready. Through the Improving Access to Assistive Technology in Fiji project, funded by the Canadian Fund for Local Initiatives, we were able to design and locally produce the first batch of roller white cane tips using 3D printing.

This marks the first practical use of 3D printing in Fiji to address gaps caused by limited local supply chains for assistive technology in the Pacific — an issue at the very core of this project. With the establishment of the nation’s first Assistive Technology Hub, we hope to continue building sustainable, local solutions.

After end-user testing and refinement, 20 roller white cane tips were produced. Five of these have already been shared with UBPF’s partner organisation in Tonga, extending the impact beyond Fiji

📣 Opportunity Alert! 📣
We are hiring one Field Engineer for each of the following countries: Fiji, Vanuatu, or Samoa.

Field Ready is seeking hands-on, practical engineers to deliver locally made solutions for disaster risk reduction and recovery across the Pacific.

We work alongside communities and partners to design, repair, and manufacture what is needed locally — from small infrastructure improvements to essential items supporting health, WASH, and livelihoods.

These field-based roles involve:
• Technical problem-solving in community settings
• Digital fabrication and traditional manufacturing
• Delivering technical training
• Working closely with local partners and apprentices

This position includes traveling within the country and potentially across the region. We are looking for adaptable engineers and strong makers who can work independently, collaborate across disciplines, and turn real-world challenges into practical solutions. Experience in humanitarian or development contexts is an advantage but not required.

Field Ready, with funding from the Canadian Fund for Local Initiatives CFLI and in close partnership with the National Council for Persons with Disabilities (NCPD), recently completed an Assistive Technology training in Fiji as part of its work to strengthen local technical capacity.

A total of 11 assistive technology technicians, including representatives from government and local and regional organizations of persons with disabilities, participated in the training. With no prior experience in computer aided design CAD, participants were guided step by step from the fundamentals through to confidently designing their own 3D models for essential assistive devices and replacement components.

Participants were also introduced to 3D printing technology, learning how to operate the machines and produce their own parts.

This activity forms part of the Improving Access to Assistive Technology in Fiji project and focuses on building local technical skills to support practical, locally driven solutions that improve people’s lives. The training was delivered over a week in November 2025.

On December 12, 2025, Field Ready proudly launched the National Assistive Technology Hub at the NCPD Complex in Suva. This milestone was made possible through a partnership between the National Council for Persons with Disabilities (NCPD) and our disability service partners, with generous support from the Canadian Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI). The hub was launched together with David Fournier, the Head of Cooperation of Canada in the Pacific.

The Hub is equipped with 3D printers, tools, and materials that will allow local technicians, caregivers, and artisans to design, repair, and produce assistive device parts right here in Fiji. From crutch tips to wheelchair footplates, solutions will now be made by our people, for our people.

This initiative is more than just equipment—it’s about skills, sustainability, and dignity. Caregivers, youth, and community members have been trained in digital manufacturing and repair, ensuring that knowledge stays in Fiji and continues to grow.

By extending the life of devices instead of replacing them, the Hub also supports Fiji’s vision for a Green Fiji. Through mobile outreach, persons with disabilities in rural and remote communities will benefit as well.

We extend heartfelt thanks to our partners: the Ministry of Health and Medical Services, the Spinal Injury Association, the Frank Hilton Organization, the United Blind Persons of Fiji, and the people of Canada for making this vision a reality.

This is not just the opening of a facility. It is the beginning of a stronger, more inclusive, and more sustainable future for persons with disabilities in Fiji.

70% of Pacific Islanders still don’t have access to a proper toilet.
Rising seas and extreme weather make this crisis even worse — flooding fragile systems, contaminating water, and spreading disease.
To tackle this challenge, Field Ready worked with Pacific communities to design a toilet made for the Pacific — lightweight, affordable, accessible, and locally manufactured using existing rotomoulding technology.
Already installed in Fiji and Vanuatu, over 2,000 Field Ready Toilets are improving sanitation for 15,000 people, while creating local jobs and resilient supply chains.
Now, we’re looking for partners and investors to bring this innovation to more Pacific countries — empowering local manufacturers and ensuring every family has access to a safe toilet made close to home.

From scrap-built packaging factories to AI-powered design labs, proved that when global know-how meets local ingenuity, solutions with real impact emerge.
Hosted at Cebu Institute of Technology - University (CIT-U) and co-organised by DTI Region 7 Central Visayas, Field Ready, and CIT-U, the festival brought together makers, MSMEs, innovators, and government leaders under the theme “Bridging Gaps Through Innovation and Collaboration.”
As Charles Barrete of Field Ready put it: What struck me at FabFest was the way conversations flowed — from grassroots ideas to global collaboration. That’s the real strength of this ecosystem: connecting the local and the global so innovation can thrive and be impactful.

What does innovation look like on the frontline of an emergency?

For us, it’s locally designed, practical solutions that keep water flowing, sanitation safe, and hygiene accessible.

At the Second National Emergency Response Team (NERT) Induction Course, Field Ready was proud to join the Fiji Emergency Medical Assistance Team (FEMAT) and the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) to showcase new WASH products co-developed for rapid response.

This training equips new responders with the skills, tools, and methods they need to serve in deployments both within Fiji and abroad. Participants from the Fiji Government, United Nations agencies, and the Pacific-Community-SPC saw first-hand how innovation can make aid faster, more effective, and accessible when it matters most.

We are proud to collaborate with partners who strengthen Fiji’s resilience in times of crisis.

“Inclusion is not charity — it is justice.”

On International Youth Day 2025, Field Ready’s own Sabina Moce joined youth leaders from across the Pacific in a webinar hosted by UNFPA Pacific and Pacific Youth Council, calling for stronger action on inclusion and resilience.

As our Gender Equality, Disability, and Social Inclusion (GEDSI) Officer in Fiji, Sabina spoke powerfully about the lived experiences of young people with disabilities — and the urgent need for policies and programs designed with them, not for them.

“We don’t want to be tokenised — we want to be heard, included, and respected. To all the young people in the Pacific: your voice matters.”

We’re proud that voices like Sabina’s are shaping conversations on disability, equality, and youth leadership across the Pacific. Her advocacy reminds us that lasting resilience begins by making space for everyone.
