🎨🧺 FIJI ARTS COUNCIL SUPPORTS RSMS RATU SUKUNA DAY CULTURAL WORKSHOP 2026 🧺🎨

The Fiji Arts Council was honoured to participate in the three-day Ratu Sukuna Day Cultural Workshop held at Ratu Sukuna Memorial School from "25th to 27th May 2026"

The workshop, organised by the dedicated teachers of Ratu Sukuna Memorial School, provided students with a valuable opportunity to learn and appreciate traditional and contemporary artistic skills through hands-on engagement with experienced artisans and artists.

A total of four facilitators represented the Fiji Arts Council during the workshop:

🧺 Weaving Tutors
• Ms Leba Gade – University of the South Pacific Student
• Ms Adi Vuki – Retired High School Teacher and former Ratu Sukuna Memorial School student (1979–1983)

🎨 Visual Artists Tutors
• Mr Anare Somumu
• Mr Mason James Lee

Year 12 and Year 13 female students enthusiastically participated in mat weaving sessions conducted by Ms Leba Gade and Ms Adi Vuki, where they learned traditional weaving techniques and gained a deeper appreciation of Fiji’s rich cultural heritage.

At the same time, students from across various year levels engaged in painting and drawing workshops facilitated by Mr Anare Somumu and Mr Mason James Lee, developing their creativity and artistic expression through practical learning experiences.

The Fiji Arts Council extends its sincere appreciation to Ratu Sukuna Memorial School for its initiative in introducing arts and cultural skills to its students. Such programmes play an important role in preserving traditional knowledge, nurturing creativity, and inspiring the next generation of artists and cultural practitioners.

We were particularly impressed by the students’ enthusiasm, cooperation, and eagerness to learn throughout the three-day workshop. Their active participation and remarkable talent were truly encouraging and demonstrated the value of integrating arts and culture into the educational experience.

Vinaka vakalevu to the Ratu Sukuna Memorial School administration, teachers, students, and all facilitators who contributed to the success of this meaningful programme.

Yesterday, we were pleased to welcome the Year 3 students of the International Secondary School to the Gallery as part of their extracurricular programme.

We acknowledge ISS for their holistic approach to education, recognising the importance of exposing students to arts, culture, and creative spaces as part of their overall learning and personal development. Visits such as these help nurture creativity, critical thinking, confidence, and a deeper appreciation for the role of the arts in society.

The students engaged enthusiastically throughout the visit, and we hope the experience has inspired greater interest in visual arts and creative expression.

Vinaka vakalevu to the teachers and students of ISS for visiting the Gallery — we look forward to welcoming you again in the future.

Today, the Fiji Arts Council was pleased to welcome 50 students from Queen Victoria School (QVS), accompanied by a number of parents, to the National Art Gallery as part of their field trip during the first week of the school holiday break.

The visit began with an engaging briefing by the Director of the Fiji Arts Council, Mr. Maciusela Raitaukala, who shared valuable insights into the role and responsibilities of the Council, as well as the rich history of this iconic heritage building. His presentation provided students with a deeper appreciation of the importance of preserving and promoting Fiji’s cultural and artistic legacy.

Following the briefing, the students toured the gallery, where they experienced firsthand the diverse and inspiring works of local artisans. The visit offered a meaningful opportunity for the students to connect with Fiji’s creative community and gain a greater understanding of the arts as a vital part of national identity.

The Fiji Arts Council extends its appreciation to the students, parents, and teachers of QVS for visiting and looks forward to continuing to inspire young minds through arts and culture.

The hands behind the art. Meet Mere Rasue, the indigenous Fijian visual artist whose vision wraps our 2026 collection. A mother of five daughters and a registered senior artist under the Fiji Arts Council, Mere’s work explores the lived realities of Fijian women, capturing the resilience and identity that define our brand.

We chose to collaborate with Mere because her values mirror ours: a deep connection to Fijian identity and a belief in the strength of women as cultural custodians and leaders.

Launching this Mother's Day.

Available now at Jacks of Fiji and Nama Fiji HQ.
