Strength, determination, and resilience are qualities that women demonstrate every day— in their professions, communities, homes, and personal pursuits.

The Fiji Women Lawyers Association is pleased to highlight Ms. Neha Ali, Manager Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) at the Consumer Council of Fiji, whose participation in powerlifting serves as a powerful reminder that women continue to challenge boundaries and redefine what strength looks like.

In her professional capacity, Ms. Ali plays an important role in facilitating the resolution of consumer disputes and promoting fair outcomes. Beyond her professional achievements, her commitment to powerlifting reflects the same discipline, perseverance, and determination that empower women to excel in all areas of life.

Whether pursuing excellence in their careers, advocating for their communities, or taking on new challenges in sport and fitness, women continue to inspire through their dedication, courage, and perseverance.

Ms. Ali's commitment to pushing beyond limits reflects the spirit of empowerment that encourages women and girls to pursue their goals with confidence and determination.

Let us continue to celebrate and support women who lead by example, inspire positive change, and demonstrate that strength comes in many forms.

It was an honour for the Fiji Women Lawyers Association to be invited to an introductory meeting with the Fiji Law Reform Commission and the Civil Rules Reference Committee led by the Retired Resident Justice of the Appeal Court, Justice Alipate Qetaki, to begin discussions on upcoming developments and proposals on the review of the High Court Rules 1988 and the Magistrates Court Rules 1945.

We value the opportunity for early engagement and look forward to continued collaboration as this progresses through the various stages of review and consultation.

We will continue to keep our members informed and, in due course, will be calling for your valuable input and perspectives as part of this process.

The Civil Rules Reference Committee continues its important work in reviewing and reforming Fiji’s High Court and Magistrates Court Rules with the objective of promoting timely, efficient and accessible civil justice.

Over the past few weeks, the Committee, led by Retired Resident Justice of the Appeal Court, Justice Alipate Qetaki, has actively engaged with key stakeholders and institutions as part of its consultation and research process. Last week, meetings were held with representatives of the Fiji Women Lawyers Association (FWLA), Fiji Young Lawyers Association (FYLA) (pictured below), and the New Zealand High Commission to discuss comparative approaches, case management practices, and opportunities for collaboration and technical support.

The Committee has also commenced work on the preparation of draft Issues and Discussion Papers. Current research includes examining developments in jurisdictions such as New Zealand, Australia, Singapore and other Commonwealth countries, particularly in areas relating to case management, mediation, procedural efficiency, electronic service, virtual hearings and access to justice.

Constructive feedback received from stakeholders has highlighted the importance of:
• meaningful and accessible mediation processes;
• improved case management systems;
• realistic procedural timelines with flexibility where necessary;
• adequate judicial and institutional resourcing; and
• practical support and guidance for legal practitioners and court users.

The Committee is also preparing for further consultations with core stakeholders from the legal profession, business sector, labour representatives and iTaukei institutions in the coming weeks.

This review process is guided by the constitutional objective of ensuring that disputes are resolved within a reasonable time and aims to strengthen confidence in Fiji’s civil justice system for all court users.

To Our Dearest FWLA Community,

It’s been a little quiet here lately, but behind the scenes, your new Council has been meeting, listening, planning and preparing for what we believe will be a truly exciting chapter for FWLA.

We are proud to finally come together and begin sharing the vision for the year ahead.

This is more than just a new term for the new Council - to build on the foundation laid for us by the previous Council and that before them. It is a year of action. A year of connection. A year of growth, purpose and meaningful change.

We want to build a stronger, more connected community of women in law, one where members feel seen, supported and empowered. We are committed to creating more opportunities to engage, collaborate and celebrate the incredible women who make up FWLA.

Because there is undeniable power in numbers.

And even greater power in women who stand together.

This is only the beginning. Stay tuned, we have so much more to share.

Happy Mother's Day to all our beautiful, strong and loving mothers 💐💜
