2003 Deans Story โ€“The Coach & Cookies.

Returning to school from the quarter finals was an event of its own. When we return to QVS, we were greeted with who we were playing for; our fellow Victorian brothers who have sacrificed a lot for us, their most senior team of the Deans Competition.

The cheers and the embrace from our school based fans, to this day still makes me tear up a bit because we now know that winning the Deans is now NOT an option but a MUST. Its the smiles that greets you and the handshake, together with our junior boys running over just to tap you on the shoulder or back to show how much they appreciate the efforts we were putting in for them to win those crucial games.

We prepped for Davuilevu for a place in the Deans Final. It was a normal week with everyone staying true to their part in the formula. Our team had minor changes and some of our senior players were struggling a bit with injuries hence we were tasked to take the team to the Finals with LMS standing in our way.

I must make mention here of our backline coach & player, who is now coaching our current U18 team; Mr Josh Waiwalu. He was the needed injection into a backline, which is already laced with our STRETCHER or I call him THE SLEEPING PILL - Mr Isimeli Logamimoce (AKA: Logan). I must also acknowledge our robust second five eight Taciqu Malakai Bakaniceva who is as robust as Logan & Josh themselves. Isaaa my Dou Ratu Kalivati Cavuilati (Rest in Love) โ€“ Hot Bread Kitchen Skipper and a one of a kind player, who I believe SBW copied his offloading game from. Tu Kali was just too good with his Rugby IQ and offloads. Anyways, let me get back to Josh Waiwalu. Josh was with the Brumbies Academy and he was returning home after a stint with them to continue his studies and Macho picked him up when he enrolled into QVS for study resumptions. Mind you Mr Waiwalu was in QVS before he went away to study abroad for a while.

Josh would carry his file to the ground with all these backline moves and training schedules etc. It was the first time for me to see such details in game organisation because as a Prop, itโ€™s just RUN STRAIGHT and break the advantage line. Anyways, Josh brought in a lot of expertise and experience which added a lot of value into our play.

Malo Taciqu Josh na veiqaravi Vinaka.

Now to our preparation for Lelean โ€“ We were on strict protocols, and everyone knew what is expected from us. Now let me just highlight this special treat we came up with. As a team, we never felt the pressure of the game and the expectation of the scored board. I can clearly remember our good chaplain reminding us to just play and the score board will take care of itself. But scoreboard pressure is real and at times it robs the best of us and we utter some words that we would regret later on. One of our coaches have this problem where he/she would start using expletives when things arenโ€™t going our way. It was a problem for us as a team because we were not accustomed to those words and as I have said earlier, we abide by a strict code which was all part of a big formula we have devised as a team.

So to solve this problem, we as a group came up with this idea, that we need to buy our coach cookies ๐Ÿ˜Š. Every time, he/she felt the need to swear, he must chew on a cookie to keep his/her mouth busy chewing so he/she couldnโ€™t utter a curse word ๐Ÿ˜‚ lol. I can still remember, when the referee would be slightly biased, and we would glance up to our mentioned coach, his/her mouth would be full of cookies ๐Ÿคฃ lolsโ€ฆ.and we would smile knowing that if the proportion of cookies chewed is as the amount of curse words uttered, Mate vakadua o Ref ๐Ÿคฃ. We ended Josaia Satiniโ€™s Leleanites Deans campaign that year and we progressed on to the Final.

Finals Week was so full of events but we rallied through as a schoolโ€ฆWE WERE TOGETHER AS ONE as we prepare for our Final week. The formula and its origin will be available soon. Its worth a read guysโ€ฆ.but Im off to work for nowโ€ฆ.Mataka qai vaoti e ๐Ÿ˜.
