【Guava Resilient Cultivation Training Strengthens Fruit Tree Management Capacity in Fiji】

The Ministry of Agriculture, Waterways and Sugar Industry in Fiji has recently been promoting the diversification of fruit production to gradually reduce the country’s dependence on the sugarcane industry. In support of this policy direction, the Taiwan Technical Mission in Fiji was invited to organize a guava cultivation training program for agricultural extension officers.

The training course focused on healthy guava orchard management and resilient cultivation techniques, including organic compost production, orchard groundcover management, fruit bagging, pruning, and grafting practices. Through a combination of classroom instruction and field demonstrations, the program aimed to strengthen the technical capacity of Fiji’s agricultural extension officers.

For the resilient cultivation component, participants conducted field-based practical exercises to learn how pruning and fruit bagging can help manage pest and disease risks while improving overall tree health. Pruned branches were also used for guava grafting practice, allowing participants to further develop their fruit tree propagation skills.

This training not only enhanced the technical knowledge of Fiji’s agricultural extension personnel, but also contributed to the diversification and sustainable development of the local fruit industry, further strengthening agricultural cooperation between Taiwan and Fiji.

🌳From 5/05/26 to 6/05/26, our ongoing collaboration with FNU CAFF (Koronivia) continued with a two-days training sessions on grafting technic used on guavas at the Koronivia demonstration farm.

During the classroom session,TTM and students of Horticulture course learned about the plant propagation and the most important knowledge about the types of Grafting techniques used such as Cleft Grafting and Bud Grafting.🪾

The students and staffs carried out the practical of guava grafting techniques used, where students applied these concepts inside the classroom.

We are wiling to share our knowledge with the students and staff.💡

Working together towards a greener future🌿, a bridging between knowledge & cultivation
A productive day in the classroom learning to field between TTM FIJI and FNU CAFF. By improving a fruit tree management today, ensures a healthier🌱, more resilient Fiji for the generations to come.

On 28/04/26 to 29/04/26, our ongoing collaboration with FNU CAFF continued with a two-day training session focused on orchard management at the Koronivia demonstration farm.🌱🌱

During the classroom session, TTM and students from Horticulture course covered the importance of guava grafting. A key focus was understanding how grafting effectively shortens the juvenility period of fruit trees, allowing them to mature and produce fruit much earlier than trees grown from seed.

We then moved out to the guava orchard for the practical portion of the class, where students applied these concepts in the field. Essential early-stage tree management tasks included:
🌱 Flower Removal: Removal of early flowers to redirect the tree's energy and nutrients into establishing a strong root system and vegetative growth.
🌳 Structural Pruning: Carefully select the four main branches on each tree. These selected branches will serve as the primary structural framework for the tree's future canopy and fruit load.

It was a productive two days combining agricultural theory with hands-on field.

🌱Another field training for the Fnu staff members & students of the CAFF on the dragon fruit planting and using compost 🥥

When it comes to composting, the Carbon-to-Nitrogen (C:N) ratio is everything. Here are the 3 golden rules we practiced today:

Balance the C:N Ratio:

Coconut husk is super high in carbon. If you use it raw, it’ll actually steal nitrogen from your soil and starve your plants. Always mix it with 20–30% nitrogen-rich "greens" (like chicken manure) to balance it out.

Keep it Moist:

Microbes need water to work. Your compost pile should feel like a damp, wrung-out sponge (about 50–60% moisture).

Turn It Often:

Composting microbes need oxygen. Regular turning keeps the pile breathing, heats it up, and breaks down those tough fibers evenly.

Compost science can get pretty deep depending on what materials you have on hand. But the best way to learn is to start making your own compost! 🌱

Date planted( Jan/08/26)

Watermelon is a refreshing fruit that can still be grown during the rainy season with proper care🍉🍉. It belongs to the cucurbit family and thrives in warm climates. During the rainy season, farmers👩‍🌾🧑‍🌾 must ensure good drainage because to much water can damage the roots and cause diseases. Watermelon plants needs sunlight☀️, fertile soil , and proper spacing to grow well. Despite the challenges of heavy in Fiji recently 🇫🇯, with good farm management, watermelon can produce sweet, juicy fruits that are rich in water, vitamins, and minerals . 🌿🌱

Some of challenges/cause faced while growing watermelons at TTM during rainy seasons are :

•Fungal diseases.🦠
•Poor pollination.
•Fruit rotting.
•pest problems.
• cracking in watermelons.
•Nutrient leaching.
• water logging .

The types of variety’s of watermelon grown in TTM are :

1.)Farmers giant.
2.)sweet beauty.
3.)Dark belle.
4.) watermelon Diana.
5.) watermelon faerie.

The staffs at TTM gathered together to taste and test the by the use of (Brix Meter) to test the sweetness of the watermelons. 🌱🍉

Collecting local coconut husk 🥥🌴for composting is a smart, sustainable way to recycle agricultural waste into something valuable. Coconut husk - the fibrous outer shell of the coconut- are rich in organic material and break down into a moisture- retentive,soil-improving amendments often coco coir . Instead of burning or discarding them, using locally available husks reduces waste , lower compost costs, and supports eco-friendly planting practices. 🌿🧑‍🌾

Using locally collected coconut husk in compost offers several environmental, soil, and economic benefits.🍅🥬

1. Improves soil structure.
2. Excellent water retention.
3. Sustainable & Eco- friendly.
4. Balances compost nutrients.
5. Encourages beneficial microorganisms.
6. Cost- effective.
7. Reduce soil erosion.

~~🍅Tomato Cultivation Training Workshop!!🍅

In recent years, farmers in Fiji have faced increasing challenges from extreme weather, including droughts and heavy rainfall. To strengthen their resilience, the TTM organized a Resilient Tomato Cultivation Training Workshop on February 16, 2026, at the Sigatoka Demonstration Farm.
Using the popular Sun Rising No.2 tomato as a demonstration crop, farmers learned climate-smart cultivation techniques and explored other vegetables suitable for summer production.
With improved skills and practical knowledge, farmers are now better prepared to maintain stable yields and increase income—even during hot and rainy seasons.
