【Guava Resilient Cultivation Training Strengthens Fruit Tree Management Capacity in Fiji】
The Ministry of Agriculture, Waterways and Sugar Industry in Fiji has recently been promoting the diversification of fruit production to gradually reduce the country’s dependence on the sugarcane industry. In support of this policy direction, the Taiwan Technical Mission in Fiji was invited to organize a guava cultivation training program for agricultural extension officers.
The training course focused on healthy guava orchard management and resilient cultivation techniques, including organic compost production, orchard groundcover management, fruit bagging, pruning, and grafting practices. Through a combination of classroom instruction and field demonstrations, the program aimed to strengthen the technical capacity of Fiji’s agricultural extension officers.
For the resilient cultivation component, participants conducted field-based practical exercises to learn how pruning and fruit bagging can help manage pest and disease risks while improving overall tree health. Pruned branches were also used for guava grafting practice, allowing participants to further develop their fruit tree propagation skills.
This training not only enhanced the technical knowledge of Fiji’s agricultural extension personnel, but also contributed to the diversification and sustainable development of the local fruit industry, further strengthening agricultural cooperation between Taiwan and Fiji.
