House of Sarah

House of Sarah The HoS was registered under the Charitable Trust Act (Cap 67) in 2012. It also provides counselling support through its 5 Dauveivukei staff. b. c. d. e. f.

The House of Sarah (HoS) established in 2009 is committed to addressing violence against women and girls within the Anglican Church, and the wider communities of faith particularly within the Christian denominations. HoS aims to provide a listening ear, warm heart and a welcoming hand to women who are facing violence; and in improving the status of women through the provision of dauveivukei (couns

elling support), support services, education, networking, partnerships and referrals. In 2013 the Diocese of Polynesia in its General Synod passed a resolution on ‘Zero tolerance on violence against women and children and the ensuing 2015 Strategic Policy which states that “…. That within the Diocese of Polynesia there be Zero Tolerance of Violence against women and children within our homes, our schools our communities and the church”, In its efforts to contribute and support the implementation of the Synod Resolution and its Strategic Policy the House of Sarah works in these key programme areas:

a. Intervention & Provision of Services – Referrals through community based Sarah Carers and providing counselling support through ‘Dauveivukei.’
HoS has about 24 Sarah Carers, the first responders in the communities. This service is supported by the Dauveivukei Ecumenical network that comprises about 8-10 women from the different denominations. Prevention of violence against women and girls – In 2018 the HoS commenced its project on Preventing Violence Against Women in Fiji’s Faith Settings (PVAWFFS) with support from Fiji Women’s Fund and UN Women Multi-country Office, Fiji. Adapted from the Raising Voices (Uganda) SASA! Faith model it focuses on maintaining power balance between women and men and girls and boys and ways in which power can be used positively to end VAW. Recognising that power imbalance between men and women is the root cause of violence in the home. Safe Home, Safe Church, Safe Communities – Entails workshops for Church leaders on gender based violence, church practices and theology and human rights. Building Coalitions – Working closely with other denominations through the Christian Talanoa Network, the Fiji Council of Churches and Women’s Fellowship. Engaging with other faiths through its Women of Faith network. In 2018 HoS initiated a public media campaign of faith leaders from the Christian, Muslim and Hindu faiths speaking out publicly against violence. Working in partnership with the Pacific Conference of Churches, a video was produced with the tagline “My Faith says No to R**e and Violence against Women and children.” The messages were shown in the cinemas and TV stations in Fiji. In 2020, four leaders in the churches in Tonga were also featured in the campaign in Tonga. That was a defining moment for Tonga since it was the first time that the Christian leaders were speaking out publicly on VAW/GBV. Advocacy and Monitoring – Monitoring government implementation of international, regional, national agreements and conversations on Ending Violence Against Women (EVAW), gender equality and human rights. Regional Support (South/South Exchange) – working collaboratively with Anglican Church in Tonga and Samoa and with Anglican Church of Papua New Guinea and Anglican Church of Melanesia on VAW. The above have been made possible with the support of partners which include Fiji Women’s Fund, UN Women through the Pacific Partnership to End Violence Against Women and recently the German Embassy in Wellington.

Every Thursday, we wear black as a visible commitment to stand against r**e, violence, and all forms of abuse.

But Thursdays in Black is more than wearing a colour — it is about choosing to speak up, to challenge harmful attitudes, to support survivors, and to take action towards creating safer communities.

At House of Sarah, we believe change begins when we each choose to stand together. A safer world starts with our voices, our actions, and our commitment to respect and dignity for all.

🖤 Wear Black.
🖤 Speak Up.
🖤 Stand Together.

Towards a world without r**e and violence.

Please find below a summary of Day Two of the First Responders Training being conducted at Vunaniu Community Hall in partnership with the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Protection - Fiji.

Today's sessions focused on empowering women of the Tikina ko Serua through knowledge, awareness, and practical understanding of the rights and protections available to individuals and families experiencing violence.

𝐒𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐎𝐧𝐞
• Basic Understanding of Human Rights
• Types of Violence, Their Causes, and Their Effects

𝐒𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐓𝐰𝐨
• Definition and Types of Domestic Violence Restraining Orders (DVROs)
• Overview of Sexual Offences Laws

A special highlight of today's training was the participation of Emi, a participant with hearing and speech disabilities. We were privileged to have two interpreters supporting her throughout the sessions, making her full participation possible through our partnership with the Fiji Association of the Deaf.

This is a meaningful step towards ensuring that our efforts to prevent and respond to violence are inclusive and accessible to all members of our communities. Emi's participation represents important progress for the Vunaniu community and the wider Serua district. As a trained First Responder, she will play a vital role in supporting and responding to cases of violence affecting persons with hearing and speech disabilities, helping to ensure that no one is left behind.

Together, we continue to build safer, more informed, and more inclusive communities.

The first of four training days, conducted in partnership with the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Protection - Fiji, focused on equipping women with the knowledge and skills to serve as First Responders (Referral Focal Points) in their respective village communities.

Delivered in the iTaukei vernacular, the training provided participants with a foundational understanding of violence against women and girls, the role of community referrals, and the importance of creating safe and supportive pathways for survivors to access help and services.

Through this training, participants are being empowered to become trusted sources of information, support, and referral within their communities, contributing to the collective effort to prevent and respond to violence.

Over three days of learning and discussion, community members came together with the House of Sarah team to explore ways of preventing violence, promoting healthy relationships, increasing awareness of HIV and AIDS, and understanding the risks of human trafficking.

The reflections below, shared in Hindustani by participants themselves, highlight the knowledge gained, the importance of speaking out against violence, and our collective responsibility in creating safer, more peaceful communities.

Their stories remind us that real change begins when individuals choose to learn, support one another, and take action.

"Humlon sikha hain ki humlon keh ekk saathe abb kaam karekeh chahiyeh humlon ke community ke ek peaceful aur happy community banae ke liyeh."

Yesterday marked the start of a four-day First Responders Training for women from the Tikina ko Serua. A total of 20 women from 9 villages are participating in this important training.

The training covers key foundational topics aimed at preparing participants to become trusted referral contacts within their communities. Through interactive sessions, the women are gaining knowledge and skills on understanding violence, responding appropriately to disclosures, providing basic support, and connecting individuals to available services and assistance.

By strengthening community-based referral networks, House of Sarah continues to support local leadership and community action towards safer, more supportive environments for women, children, and families.

We commend the participants for their commitment to learning and for stepping forward to serve their communities. We look forward to the positive impact they will make in their respective villages.

It's More Than Wearing Black. It's Stepping Up and Showing Up

For more than 10 years, I have been advocating through .
For me, it's never been just about wearing black on Thursdays. It's about stepping up and showing up. It's about taking a stand against r**e and all forms of violence, and working towards a world where every person can live in safety, dignity, and peace.

Real change begins with each one of us. It starts with how we speak out, how we raise awareness, how we challenge harmful attitudes, and how we support those affected by violence.

Every conversation matters. Every action counts. Every voice can make a difference.

Today, I wear black in solidarity with survivors and in commitment to ending violence against women and girls. — Mereani Nawadra

Today and tomorrow, church leaders and representatives from across Fiji gather in prayer, reflection, and dialogue as they consider the ongoing Constitution Review process and discern a collective Christian contribution for the future of our nation.

As people of faith, we recognise that constitutions are not only legal documents—they shape the values, relationships, and aspirations of a country. This gathering provides an opportunity for church leaders to listen deeply, engage respectfully, and seek God's wisdom as they reflect on how Christian principles of justice, dignity, compassion, accountability, and peace can contribute to national conversations.

House of Sarah is encouraged to be part of this important journey, standing alongside faith leaders committed to promoting the wellbeing of all people in Fiji, especially women, children, families, and vulnerable communities.

As discussions unfold, we pray for wisdom, unity, courage, and discernment for all participants. May these conversations be guided by a shared desire to build a Fiji where every person is valued, protected, and able to flourish.
