MES Signs Grant Agreement with Ministry of Women for Tavua Womens Waste Management Project

The Mamanuca Environment Society (MES) has officially signed a grant agreement with the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Protection to support the Tavua Women’s Project, focusing on sustainable waste management initiatives. This partnership will empower women to lead community actions in waste segregation, recycling, composting, and awareness on proper waste disposal.

The project not only promotes a cleaner and healthier environment but also creates opportunities for income generation and strengthens women’s role in environmental stewardship.

MES acknowledges the Ministry of Women for its continued support towards women-led community development and remains committed to working collaboratively to advance sustainable practices and improve livelihoods.

MES Partners with Pacific Recycling Foundation for Waste Audit in the Mamanuca’s

The Pacific Recycling Foundation, in collaboration with the Mamanuca Environment Society and in partnership with the University of New South Wales, successfully conducted a waste audit yesterday in Tavua and Yanuya. This activity forms part of a broader national initiative aimed at systematically assessing waste composition and volumes across selected mainland and outer island communities in Fiji.
The audit supports efforts to better understand waste management practices, identify pathways of plastic leakage into the marine environment, and strengthen national waste and plastics data systems. The information gathered through this exercise will contribute to evidence-based policy development and inform future interventions focused on sustainable waste management and the advancement of circular.

The students of Namamanuca Primary School gathered early this month to celebrate at Yanuya village hall to commemorate World Nature Conservation Day- joining the global movement to promote the protection and sustainable management of our natural resources. This annual observance serves as a vital reminder that a healthy environment is the foundation of a healthy society, and that conserving nature is key to securing a sustainable future.“This initiative empowers students to take the lead in conservation and gives them a voice in shaping a cleaner, healthier future,” said Ilisapeci Narube, Senior Project Officer with the Mamanuca Environment Society (MES).

In recognition of the day, seventy six students took part in a program that combined environmental education with practical conservation action. The day began with a presentation on the importance of World Nature Day followed by Beach Audit and Clean-Up, collecting marine litter and learning about the impact of waste on marine life.

The senior students conducted a house-to-house Waste Management Campaign, spreading awareness across the village about proper waste disposal and the importance of waste sorting.Together, the students collected 13 bags of litter, helping to restore the village foreshore and nearby areas. As part of the outreach program, students distributed waste management flyers to 62 households, using the opportunity to educate their community on simple but effective waste sorting and management practices. These efforts aimed not only to improve local waste habits but also to foster a stronger sense of environmental responsibility among residents.

The Mamanuca Environment Society proudly supported Namamanuca Primary School in organizing this event. MES remains committed to promoting environmental education and conservation awareness throughout the Mamanuca Region. By working closely with local schools and communities, MES aims to instill a deep respect for biodiversity and emphasize the direct link between healthy ecosystems and sustainable livelihoods.

"Celebrations such as World Nature Conservation Day are not only moments of learning—they are catalysts for lifelong environmental stewardship."

Castaway Island Launches Sculptural Coral Gene Bank to Boost Reef Regeneration and Conservation Education

A groundbreaking marine-grade sculpture has been installed off the shores of Castaway Island, Fiji, as part of an ambitious new initiative to regenerate coral reefs and engage guests in reef conservation education. This installation represents the latest phase in OUTRIGGER Resorts & Hotels’ long-term commitment to safeguarding the fragile marine ecosystems surrounding its Fijian resorts.

The innovative structure functions as a Sculptural Coral Gene Bank, housing more than 500 genetically resilient parent corals carefully selected for their ability to thrive in changing ocean conditions. These parent corals form a living seed bank, enabling marine scientists to monitor, propagate, and restore coral species critical to reef survival and resilience.

The project will unfold in two strategic phases:

Phase One (May–June 2025): Anchoring of the sculpture, coral health assessments, and transplantation of resilient coral species onto the structure.

Phase Two (2026): Deployment of smaller coral nursery structures, which will nurture fragments from the original parent stock before transplanting them onto surrounding reef areas. This approach aims to establish a continuous, sustainable cycle of reef restoration.

This initiative is part of the OUTRIGGER Zone, the brand’s global conservation program, and is implemented in partnership with Counting Coral, a nonprofit organization known for blending science, art, and reef regeneration. Their collaboration emphasizes the use of creative marine design to restore biodiversity and promote marine awareness among travelers and local communities alike.

The official launch of the Sculptural Coral Gene Bank was officiated by the Honourable Minister of Tourism and Aviation, Mr. Viliame Gavoka, alongside representatives of Vanua Lawa, the tourism sector, and local media. The event underscored the growing momentum around reef conservation as an integral part of responsible and regenerative tourism in Fiji.

As a founding member of the Mamanuca Environment Society (MES), Castaway Island continues to lead by example in marine and terrestrial conservation efforts. From implementing sustainable resort practices to championing marine biodiversity, Castaway Island remains dedicated to preserving the natural beauty that defines Fiji.

MES Attends Pilot Workshop for the Micro-Qualification on Scaling-Up Community-Based Fisheries Management

The Mamanuca Environment Society (MES) was honored to participate in a week-long pilot workshop on Community-Based Fisheries Management (CBFM), held at the Nalagi Hotel from June 23rd to 27th, 2025.

In the Pacific context, CBFM represents a community-driven, ecosystem-based approach to fisheries management. It aims to sustain marine resources, support livelihoods, and build resilient island communities. This workshop provided an invaluable platform for knowledge exchange and capacity-building, offering participants a comprehensive understanding of CBFM at both sub-national and national levels.

Through interactive sessions, case studies, and strategic planning exercises, participants enhanced their expertise, built confidence, and developed strategic insights to better support and promote CBFM initiatives in their communities.

The workshop was facilitated by the Institute of Marine Resources (IMR), the University of the South Pacific (USP), and Pacific TAFE. It brought together representatives from key regional institutions and organizations including the Pacific Community (SPC), Locally Managed Marine Areas (LMMA), CChange, the College of the Marshall Islands, the National University of Samoa, the Vanuatu Institute of Technology, Fisheries departments, and the CBFM-1 and CBFM-2 projects, alongside MES.

A key component of the workshop involved reviewing and providing feedback on the Learning Outcomes (LOs) of the proposed CBFM micro-qualification framework. These include:

LO 1.1: Understanding the current status of CBFM practices

LO 1.2: Identifying key challenges and needs in current CBFM contexts, including Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI) considerations

LO 1.3: Reviewing fisheries rules, policies, and legislation relevant to CBFM

LO 1.4: Applying inclusive and practical participatory management tools for CBFM

LO 1.5: Designing a costed implementation plan for scaling up CBFM at sub-national or national levels

The development of this micro-qualification is in line with the Pacific Framework for Action on Scaling-Up CBFM, endorsed by Pacific Fisheries Ministers in 2021. This framework recognizes the urgent need to expand CBFM efforts as a key strategy to address the ongoing decline of coastal fisheries resources.

MES remains committed to supporting community-led marine resource management and is proud to contribute to regional efforts to strengthen and scale up CBFM across the Pacific.
