Last week, our President Vai Leavaiseeta, was invited to speak on a panel hosted by the Judicial Council on Diversity and Inclusion (JCDI). The JCDI’s purpose is to promote fairness, inclusion, and equality of treatment for all court users — regardless of race, culture, faith, gender identity, sexuality, ability, or age — and to build public trust and confidence in our courts.
As a member of the JCDI, Vai had the privilege of participating in the Diversity in the Law panel alongside representatives from Pride in Law, Courtney Thorne, the Queensland African Lawyers Network (QALN) Olamide Kowalik, and the Asian Australian Lawyers Association (AALA), Reimen Hii. They are pictured in the photo below. The panel was facilitated by the Hon Chief Justice Helen Bowskill of the Supreme Court of Queensland, whom is also the chair of the JCDI.
Vai shared with us her takeaway from the panel, "What stood out most was the shared commitment among all present: diversity isn’t just something to celebrate — it’s something to embed through action, leadership, and opportunity. When the bench, bar, and community stand together, we have a more inclusive pathway for those who come after us."
