World Environment Day 2026 is a global call for climate action.

Nakau and Live and Learn often work in partnership, collaborating with Indigenous landowners across the Pacific on nature-based solutions that support positive climate outcomes.

In Solomon Islands, the Carbon Financed Forest Conservation Project looks at locally owned conservation carbon projects that use the Nakau approach. While Live & Learn lead on Climate Resilient Islands projects, designed around the needs, priorities and knowledge of individual communities.

Both are supported by New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade which works closely with remote communities, local partners and government to support projects that benefit both people and nature.

Spending time in nature with forest rangers and community is a highlight of our work. The people behind the Drawa Forest Project are some of the most inspiring folks we've met—their passion for conservation when surrounded by logging is testament to this.

Don't forget to read their story! 🌳 https://stories.nakau.org/a-new-era-conservation-fiji 🌳 These custodians put so much work into protecting nearly 4000 hectares of stunning forest, and their story is an important one to share because it’s about the journey to now. Choosing conservation over logging.

A heartfelt thank you to Drawa Block Forest Community Cooperative for having us recently, and especially to Jerry, Senitiki, Kinijoti, Inoke, Lidiana and Niumaia Nalevea for your time and the knowledge shared. There are so many incredible photos that came out of this visit, and we haven’t even got to the bird and nature ones yet. Coming soon. 🐦

Drawa have recently established a new alternative business too, a beautiful retreat in Drawa Village—The Ideal Drawa Eco Retreat. It's a special place up there. 🌺

With lots of milestones reached lately, we also want to acknowledge those communities quietly working away in the background, preparing their forests for protected area status.

Like Sobehatunga Conservation Area in Viru Harbour, Western Province. While they are waiting for official Protected Area declaration, the custodians of this forest have been working with NRDF: learning more about ranger work, sharing of carbon benefits, alternative income opportunities—all working together to prepare their project.

Learn all about Sobetahunga's incredible forest and the community behind the project here: https://stories.nakau.org/a-forest-restored

The Viru Harbour (Sobehatunga) conservation and carbon work is supported by NRDF, Nakau and Live & Learn Environmental Education—as part of the Solomon Islands Threshold Program.

In Fiji, is the ancestral connection between people, plans and animals. A totem that reminds us we are nature. Drawa forest Senitiki shares some of what he knows about his relationship to the forest in Drawa Conservation Area.

“We Indigenous People are connected to the forests. We [Drawa] have our totem plant—the Vono and our totem animal, the Kula (Collared Lory). We must rightfully care for them because we are connected to our natural resources, the land. We are all connected.” 📷 Tom Vierus

“Money we just use it and it’s gone, but the forest is here with us for life.”

The full film outlaying Drawa's story is here. 🎥

Fiji’s forests have been under threat from logging for decades. But rangers like Jerry, Senitiki and the whole ranger team and communities are committed to protecting the forest they grew up with in Drawa. Their story is one to inspire forest communities everywhere.

Here, thousands of hectares of forest have been kept safe from logging bringing long-term environmental, social and economic benefits for communities connected with this important place, and ensuring a safe haven for Fiji’s unique .

Healthy forests are so critical for our climate, for people, plants and animals. And spending time in the Drawa Conservation Area is a tonic for life. Beautiful big old trees, clean water and healthy food collected from the land. Bird song, butterflies and frogs.

🌳 We'd love you to watch and share this film—inviting others to take a walk in the Drawa forest with its custodians.

Awesome celebratory photos coming out of beautiful —capturing the coming together of customary landowners across the five communities that are collaboratively protecting Yato's forests.

Ceremonies in Kirakira, Hariga and Kereapena over 10 days, saw 1700 people: landowners, ministers, officials and NGO partners, all recognising what this means for forests, people, biodiversity, culture and sustainable economies.

Amazing effort Live & Learn Solomon Islands to organise these events and bring everyone together to mark 10 years of hard work and commitment.
