Giant tube worms thrive next to boiling, toxic volcanoes on the seafloor - and they don't even have a mouth or a stomach!
They live on hydrothermal vents where no sunlight ever reaches, so they can't photosynthesize or hunt. Because they host billions of chemosynthetic bacteria inside their bodies that convert toxic hydrogen sulfide into sugar, the worms don't need a mouth or a stomach to survive.

Malleefowl parents abandon their chicks the moment they hatch - and the babies have to dig their way out of a giant dirt mound alone!
The male builds a massive compost heap of rotting leaves and sand to incubate the eggs, but the parents leave right before they hatch. Because the parents leave them completely alone, the newborn chicks don't learn to forage or survive from their parents—they have to dig their way out of the dirt and fly away immediately.

Did you know that Painted turtle hatchlings survive freezing in their nests all winter — and they do it without any oxygen!? -This is because they can survive for months in sub-zero mud with their blood completely depleted of oxygen by shifting their metabolism to run on anaerobic processes. Because they can buffer the lactic acid build-up using calcium from their shells, the hatchlings don't suffocate or suffer fatal acidosis while trapped under the ice.
