Today’s Keynote Spotlight: James Swain! At the 19th World Congress on Infant Mental Health, attendees will hear from James Swain as he explores the neuroscience of caregiving, attachment, and recovery in parent-infant relationships.

One essential takeaway from his work: parental brain circuits that balance care and defense in response to the infant are a central pathway through which risk is transmitted and recovery is made possible.

Key themes from the session include:
🔹 How sensitive caregiving supports healthy child development through real-time parent-infant attunement
🔹 The impact of maternal psychopathology, including opioid use disorder, on empathic engagement and neural circuitry
🔹 How interventions such as Mom Power can help restore empathic connection and support healthier parent-infant relationships

Join us at the 19th World Congress on Infant Mental Health, October 2–6, 2026 in Toronto, Canada, to learn from global leaders advancing infant and early mental health research, practice, and policy.

Niels Peter Rygaard (Denmark) writes about intercultural cooperation in infant mental health through the global training work of the Fairstart Foundation, in partnership with organizations across 38 countries. The paper poses the dilemma of how extensive childcare research from Western countries can be integrated with the rich traditions of indigenous infant care on equal terms, in contexts shaped by historical and ongoing inequalities. It emphasizes the importance of traditional collective care practices in strengthening attachment and community resilience, and the need to adapt interventions in close collaboration with local caregivers, researchers, and governments.

Intro In the post-colonial era, many Indigenous communities, ethnic groups, and nations return to their roots by rekindling and preserving their traditional family and childcare practices. Escalating migration has intensified conflicts over cultural identity, adding to challenges in intercultural co...

Today's “Key Notes from the Keynotes” introduces us to Paul Ramchandani, who will deliver a Keynote Session at World Congress!

Paul Ramchandani’s session will explore the latest findings from the Healthy Start Happy Start trial, the largest randomized controlled trial of the video feedback intervention ViPP-SD, and what it will take to bring effective parenting supports to families at scale.

Here are some of the key notes we’re looking forward to:

✔️ New long-term findings showing sustained benefits of ViPP-SD from age 2 through age 8
✔️ How video feedback interventions can positively impact children’s behaviour and everyday functioning
✔️ Emerging evidence linking early intervention to gains in cognitive development, including executive functioning
✔️ The practical challenges of scaling evidence-based parenting interventions without losing quality or impact
✔️ Important questions around accessibility: can video feedback work for everyone, and how do we reach more families?
✔️ Why meaningful collaboration between policymakers, researchers, practitioners, and parents is essential for lasting systems change
✔️ How shared purpose can help move beyond small differences to create broader impact for children and families

This session will offer an inspiring and evidence-informed look at how early intervention science can translate into real-world change when innovation and collaboration come together.

Don’t miss Paul Ramchandani’s Keynote Session at WAIMH 2026! Congress registration is now open! Secure your spot today: https://shorturl.at/wOP18
