Rustic Bunting and Red-flanked Bluetail ringing in eastern Finland.

Busy days! At the moment we have been ringing in 5 different locations around eastern Finland. Rustic Bunting seems to have a good year as daily total of our sites has been around 300-450 this week. First adult Red-flanked Bluetails have been ringed, as well as some very juvenile ones are still around and doing their postjuvenile moult.

The season is on! First two mornings for this autumn at our Hyrynsalmi site produced 22 Red-flanked Bluetails and 24 Rustic Buntings. Looks like juvenile Red-flanked Bluetails are already moving a little bit around. We will return and start our autumn ringing in multiple sites in 1,5 weeks.

First Rustic Buntings for this spring have already been seen here in Finland! Rustic Bunting population has been on a rapid rise for some years now but summer 2024 was not that good. It will be exciting to see how they are doing this summer. Here is a graph presenting a population trend in past ~20 years based on the annual line transect data.

This year we finished our season 17th September. The ringing numbers were really similar than last year. Autumn 2024 totals stand at 1519 Rustic Buntings and 177 Red-flanked Bluetails. Last autumn the numbers were 1647 Rustics and 169 Bluetails.

In general, this year was pretty poor for Red-flanked Bluetail in Finland as only ~250 singing males were reported. Also Rustic Bunting population has declined a little bit two years in a row now according to annual bird census data.

We finished our ringing efforts in our Ilomantsi and Lieksa locations earlier this week. The ringing numbers for buntings were quite similar than last year and a bit better for bluetails. We are still ringing at our Hyrynsalmi location but bunting migration is almost over there. Bluetails are still moving and even some pretty juvenile birds are caught. We will post the autumn ringing totals later on.

At the multi-year (2020, 2021, 2023) ringing site for Rustic Buntings and Red-flanked Bluetails in Lieksa, Eastern Finland, ringing started on August 25. During the past five days, the weather has been exceptionally warm and the south-west wind strong. Now, after five mornings of ringing effort, it seems that either there are fewer young Rustic Buntings than last year, or the migration has not yet properly started. The coming week will certainly shed light on the matter. On the five mornings of the ringing effort, ringed Rustic Buntings / morning are 18, 12, 12, 31 and 25 = 98 in total. The number of the ringed Red-flanked Bluetails / morning are 5, 3, 0, 2 and 1 = 11 in total.

Two weeks ago we got a really interesting Rustic Bunting ring recovery! Bird survey professional Aleksi Mikola was doing some line transects in Simo area, NW Finland, and got to see a breeding Rustic Bunting male with a ring. Aleksi couldn't read the ring nor catch the bird but informed us. We knew it would be really interesting recovery so we started to search for ringers living close by. Finally, we managed to find a local ringer Kari-Pekka Hiltunen and he went there next morning and caught the bird! And indeed, it was one of ours from eastern Finland! It was originally ringed on migration in one of our Kivilahti sites in Lieksa 10.9.2022 by Jari Laitasalo. And was re-captured there in the breeding site 14.6.2024. That bird presents the first glimpse of where do the buntings we ring on migration come from!

The season is on! This gorgeous guy from this morning is our first ringing for this year. Still quite some snow in most of our Red-flanked Bluetail sites but first males are already singing there.

Red-flanked Bluetail postjuvenile moult

During recent years we have studied the extent of postjuvenile moult in Red-flanked Bluetail in Finland. Our material includes 476 birds, most being juvenile birds in autumn. But there are also many 1st summer males that we have caught from territories.

Postjuvenile moult always includes all the body feathers and birds turn to a nice and fresh female-type plumage in their first autumn. In the wing, postjuvenile moult includes all the lesser and median coverts and normally 2-4 inner greater coverts. Very rarely almost all greater coverts and even a carpal covert and 1-2 alula feathers are moulted. Also very rarely 1-2 tertials are moulted. But normally postjuvenile moult doesn't include carpals, alulas or tertials. Tail feathers are never included in postjuvenile moult in our data.

Ringing season 2023 was finished in our sites at 8th September. Our autumn total stands at 1647 Rustic Buntings and 169 Red-flanked Bluetails. Rustic Bunting migration was clearly slower than last year. Bluetails did very good instead. Now just hoping for some recoveries!
