In 1962, Brendon Grimshaw purchased Moyenne Island in the Seychelles for roughly $11,000. At the time, the small island was completely barren and uninhabited.

Over the following decades, Grimshaw dedicated his life to restoring its ecosystem. He personally planted more than 16,000 trees, created walking trails, and reintroduced endangered species — most notably giant Aldabra tortoises — transforming the once-desolate island into a lush, thriving nature sanctuary.

Despite numerous offers from wealthy developers eager to turn the island into a luxury resort, Grimshaw consistently refused. He famously rejected a $50 million bid, determined to keep Moyenne Island as a protected natural haven open for people to enjoy rather than a private commercial venture.

In 2009, his vision was permanently secured when Moyenne Island was incorporated into the Sainte Anne Marine National Park, becoming the smallest national park in the world.

Grimshaw lived on the island until his death in 2012, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of conservation and environmental stewardship that continues to protect this unique paradise for future generations.

China has achieved one of the most ambitious environmental turnarounds in modern history by reforesting an area roughly equivalent to the size of Japan—approximately 370,000 to 400,000 square kilometers—over the past two decades.

This remarkable feat stems from sustained government-led initiatives, including the expansive Three-North Shelterbelt Program, also known as China's Great Green Wall, alongside the Grain for Green Project and Natural Forest Protection Program.

Launched decades earlier but accelerating sharply since 2000, these efforts involved planting billions of trees across degraded lands, former farmlands, and arid northern regions to combat desertification from the Gobi and Taklamakan deserts.

Forest cover in China has risen from around 10-12 percent in the mid-20th century to over 25 percent today, transforming vast barren expanses into wooded landscapes. Millions of hectares were afforested annually through state campaigns that mobilized communities, employing advanced techniques like aerial seeding and drought-resistant species.

Beyond expanding greenery, the programs have curbed soil erosion, reduced dust storms affecting cities like Beijing, enhanced carbon sequestration, and improved local water retention and biodiversity in targeted areas.

While challenges persist—such as ensuring long-term survival of monoculture plantations, balancing water use in dry zones, and verifying net ecological gains amid some reported trade-offs—the scale of this human-engineered greening stands as a testament to centralized planning and persistent investment in ecological restoration. China now ranks as the world's leading contributor to global land greening, offering lessons for other nations facing climate and land degradation pressures.

Colombia has taken one of the boldest conservation steps in modern history by declaring its entire Amazon biome a reserve zone for renewable natural resources. The move protects more than 483,000 square kilometers of rainforest, around 42% of Colombia’s continental territory, and blocks new large-scale oil, gas, and mining projects across the region. Officials said the policy will halt dozens of pending extractive proposals, including 43 oil projects and 286 mining applications, marking a major shift away from short-term resource exploitation and toward long-term ecological protection.

The decision is especially significant because Colombia is now being described as the first Amazonian country to extend this kind of protection across all of the Amazon rainforest within its borders. Supporters say the measure could help slow deforestation, protect biodiversity, and preserve one of the planet’s most important carbon sinks, while also safeguarding territories that are home to hundreds of Indigenous communities.

At a time when the Amazon is under growing pressure from climate change, land clearing, and industrial expansion, Colombia’s policy is being seen as a powerful example of how national governments can place environmental survival ahead of fossil fuel development. It also sends a wider message to other rainforest nations that protecting the Amazon at scale is still politically possible.

Source: The development was reported in an article originally published by Colombia One on November 14, 2025, and indexed by the Business & Human Rights Resource Centre. It was also later summarized by WAMC / Earth Wise on February 5, 2026.

Swedish billionaire Johan Eliasch purchased 400,000 acres of the Amazon rainforest specifically to protect it from destruction. Upon acquiring the land, he immediately shut down all logging operations to preserve the existing ecosystem. This move directly addresses the ongoing threats of deforestation and biodiversity loss in the world's most vital rainforest.

Eliasch’s intervention demonstrates how private wealth can be utilized to safeguard critical global environments. By removing the land from the industrial market, he has created a permanent sanctuary for thousands of species. This action sends a clear message about the urgent need to prioritize conservation over short-term commercial gain.

This initiative serves as a powerful example of individual environmental leadership and corporate responsibility. It highlights the significant impact that targeted land preservation can have on the global climate. Protecting the Amazon remains a crucial step in ensuring the long-term health and stability of the planet.
