HAPPY WORLD BICYCLE DAY! 🌍 💚 🚲

The UN General Assembly decided to declare 3 June World Bicycle Day, acknowledging the uniqueness, longevity and versatility of the bicycle. It has been in use for two centuries and to this day continues to be a simple, affordable, reliable, clean and environmentally fit sustainable means of transportation.

For us though, every day is a bicycle day. 😜

The survey is conducted in collaboration between the FinnCycle research program at Tampere University and the Winter Cycling Federation. The results will be used both locally and (inter)nationally to promote year-round active commuting.

Schemes and campaigns that encourage people to bike to school and bike to work are present in countries all over Europe. 🇪🇺 However, the potential of projects and programs that encourage children to cycle to venues of their extracurricular activities seems to be untapped. That's why we have initiated the Sustainable and Inclusive Access to Sport Practice (SIASP) project. ☀️🚴‍♀️🌥🚴🌧🚴‍♂️🌨

Along with partners Cyklokoalícia and Active Austria we will present our findings and project results this week at the international conference Cyklomestá 2025 in Trnava, Slovakia. 🇸🇰 It will be streamed online and you can register here: https://cyklomesta.sk/en/

Harri is a year-round cyclist who works as a traffic engineer for the City of Oulu 🇫🇮. He is passionate about infrastructure design, particularly the quality of built infrastructure. Harri also works on winter maintenance development and plays a key role in fine-tuning Oulu's world-class winter maintenance practices.

Harri's presentation will provide a brief overview of the latest developments in Oulu, including infrastructure improvements and winter maintenance projects. He will also discuss seasonal changes and strategies to minimize their impact.

Isla Tanaka, Winter Cycling Federation board member, is an urban planner with a passion for designing places for people of all ages and abilities in all seasons. She is particularly interested in urban design that uses winter city and universal design principles. She believes strongly in creating walkable, bikeable communities.

The 2024 Winter Cycling Congress was held in Edmonton, Canada. 🇨🇦 Isla will provide an update on the legacy of the congress in her home city. She will cover winter cycling policy, the expanded cycling infrastructure network and community activities in Edmonton over the past year.

In Montréal 🇨🇦 the cycling season never ends. To make it possible for people to ride throughout all seasons, 2,000 BIXI Montréal bikes have been adapted for winter, equipped with studded tires and non-slip pedals.
