This attack was entirely unprovoked and unexpected. Following the incident, the victim immediately rushed to the OYS emergency, and the police were notified. Fortunately, the victim has since been discharged from the hospital, as his injuries were non-fatal.
The police have recovered the weapon from the scene and are currently investigating the case. The couple remains in a state of deep shock and trauma as they process this event. As a community, we are doing everything possible to provide them with the support they need.
Current Actions and Outreach:
* The Anti-Racism Support Centre has been informed.
* The University of Oulu has been formally notified of the incident.
* Kaleva has been contacted, and we are currently awaiting a response.
Our primary goal is to ensure this incident is not overlooked. We want the victim’s voice to be heard and to work toward a future where no one else has to face such violence. We recall a similar incident involving a Bangladeshi student two years ago; since then, the city has been very active with anti-racism campaigns, and we truly appreciate those efforts.
While the police investigation is ongoing, we are refraining from labeling this a racist attack and will await the official conclusion of the authorities.
Oulu is our home, and we are committed to ensuring it remains a safe and welcoming place for everyone.
